Nothing too surprising here:

http://sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/finances/

We're #1 among FCS teams, and if I understand their terminology correctly, the amount we spend on athletics, expressed as earmarked spending in the school's budget, is higher than anyone else in the country.

Nope, Delaware is higher..woohoo!

EDIT: UMass, CCU, Towson, and many others are higher as a % subsidy.

Yay we're not the #1 % subsidy anymore! Message board trolls be damned!

We're still the #1 highest $ amount of fees in the country.

So I thought we were supposed to be getting in line for that Cox legislation that passed. What was it? 60% for Fcs?
It doesn't appear we're making progress there.

Cox legislation does not include monies that go toward football stadium debt among other things and this number does.

Under the cox legislation we are roughly where we need to be.

One of the most surprising things that stood out to me was Rutgers with a really high subsidy %. They are the highest of any P5 and not far below JMU.
With Big 10 revenue, why are their students having to foot so much of the bill?

RE: Latest USA Today Football Program Budgets
Quote:For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2015, JMU generated over $35 million of its revenue from these student fees. The Cox Bill states that FCS programs such as JMU and William and Mary must rely on student fees for no more than 70% of its expenses. However, for purposes of these calculations, the legislation also provides for excluding certain expenses that I discussed above that JMU includes in its athletics budget – namely spirit groups, debt services (that were approved by the Commonwealth prior to June 30, 2015) and institutional service charges. After that consideration, JMU sits at 58 percent of its budget stemming from student fees, which is well below the Cox Bill requirement at the FCS level.

Was the shifting of the pep band job from Athletics to School of Music part of JMU's continuing attempt to bring us in line with the new law?

So the school is in line with the legislations limits? Darn it. What can we find to pick on now? Wait, I hate the color purple. I think Mr. Alger chose the current shade of it to make all of our teams look feminine. I mean when most of your sports are female anyway, he must have been thinking that. Fire the guy!

The focus of this article on social media has been more positive about JMU's relative revenues- 59th overall, highest in FCS and one of the highest outside P5- really more in line with AAC levels than other P5/mid major conferences.

Yeah but no one is pointing out the elephant in the room. The high "revenue" is really involuntary student fees, which we lead all D1 athletic programs by the metric. Not something to really be proud of, even if our overall cost of attendance for a student is among the lowest.

Good points. Some, perhaps a lot, of the P5 schools require students to pay for tickets to athletic events - especially the money sports of football and MBB. I don't know if that revenue is counted or not. Too lazy to look it up. I assume it is. I believe students get into all athletic events at JMU for free - as they should of course!! The exception of course being the NCAA home playoff FB games and even then it isn't terrible...which also gives me another chance to give a shout out to the students for their showing up big for the SHSU game last year in the freezing cold.

This article lists the top 25 most expensive season tickets for FB (edit note: should have said "STUDENT season tickets for FB")... http://www.scout.com/college/football/st...ket-prices

This must be taken with a grain of salt though because there are some schools like Oregon (most expensive) where it states the $367 price tag is to sit in a preferred section for students while there are other pricing options for students and mentions a lottery system to get tickets via added fees as part of overall tuition costs. So, not sure if apples to apples comparisons or if voluntary vs involuntary. Also, some bundle student ticket costs with MBB.

Also, he only blamed Alger. He must blame Bourne with Alger. You can't just blame one without the other. Major JMU Fanhood and Dukes Domain board violation apparently.

Come on, Nation. Step up your JMU Fanhood game!! Now, start being more miserable and a cry baby. Let's see some real tears please. I blame Alger and Bourne for your ineptness when it comes to being a sad sack. (see how I worked them both in?...leading by example)

Yep - our spending/revenue numbers "cluster" with the AAC schools. We massively outspend most of the CAA and also schools like NDSU/SDSU. Only UD is in the same ballpark spending wise, and even there it's not that close.

In terms of Virginia schools, it's UVA, VT, JMU, ODU. Everyone else has a much smaller athletic budget.

To me, these budget numbers are an indicator of who our "athletic peers" should be. We are a 10 ton gorilla in FCS beating up all the midgets.

I know VT charges ~$85 for student season tix to FB and ~$60 for MBB. We could argue that it is immaterial in the big picture but it could shift ~$.5-1M from expense to revenue.

I think JMU stepped up and paid for all the students tickets which again cuts revenue and increases expenses.

^^ How dare you point out the obvious, many on here are happy to beat up on midgets and feel good about what a POWERHOUSE JMU is.
