ND/Arkansas announce home/home series (2020/2025)
NOTRE DAME, Indiana - The University of Notre Dame and the University of Arkansas, two historically prominent names on the college football landscape, will meet for the first time on the football field in 2020 when the Razorbacks come to Notre Dame Stadium.

The Irish return the game in 2025 when Notre Dame travels to Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville to play Arkansas.

Dates of the games are Sept. 12, 2020, at Notre Dame and Oct. 4, 2025, at Arkansas.

“This two-game series will provide our program with another opportunity to play a top-caliber foe from the Southeastern Conference,” said Dick Corbett Head Football Coach at the University of Notre Dame Brian Kelly. “Coach (Bret) Bielema is a tremendous coach and his teams have always played a physical style of football. I know our team and fans will be excited to play the Razorbacks.”

Arkansas is one of four Southeastern Conference programs that has never faced the Irish in football (also Auburn, Kentucky and Mississippi State). Among 45 previous meetings between Notre Dame and SEC teams, the most prominent opponents for the Irish have been LSU (11 games), Tennessee (eight) and Alabama (seven). Notre Dame 11 times has faced a current SEC member in a postseason bowl game—three times each versus Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M (the A&M games came when the Aggies played in the Southwest Conference) and one each against Georgia and Florida.

“Whenever we have an opponent come to Notre Dame Stadium for the first time, there’s another layer of interest in the game. The same is true for our program and fans when we play away from home at a first-time venue,” says Notre Dame vice president and James E. Rohr athletics director Jack Swarbrick. “That is especially likely to be true of these games given the quality and tradition of the two programs.”

Arkansas becomes the third SEC opponent added recently to future Irish schedules: --Notre Dame plays Georgia in 2017 (at Notre Dame) and 2019 (at Athens). --The Irish meet Texas A&M in 2024 (at College Station) and 2025 (at Notre Dame).

Figured those two would have met up in a Cotton Bowl.

So in 2020 it will be the meeting of two schools that haven't won a conference football championship in 30 years. :)

Fun facts: I looked at all games listed on Sports-Reference that were played by the current "power 65" schools (P5 + ND). Then I counted how many other "power 65" opponents they have played at least once throughout history. Ranked in descending order:

1. Nebraska (59)

So no team has ever "hit for the cycle", huh?

Ole Miss has been REALLY slacking off, though!

Texas-Clemson and Texas-FSU are obvious matchups for opening-week neutral site games. The fact they've never played is a great promotional hook.

That's one thing, which is a big caveat, for college football viewership/fan bases: they like what they know.

Yeah sure, Texas Florida State and Texas Clemson seem like huge, sexy matchups ..... on paper. Then you play the game, in some massive neutral site venue ... perhaps even a dang NASCAR track ... and it's like "... meh". The reason those teams don't play each other, is that they (and their fan bases) don't know each other. You can't force college football ... the fans don't won't go with it. They like long, historic rivalries the best.

As as Miss State.

I could give Wazzou (isolated) and Utah (newish to P5) some slack.

Well, it would be better if the lists would be updated for just the last 10 years. Just because Minnesota played NC State back in 1967, doesn't really matter much. (I made that up, to demonstrate the point)

As for the Mississippi schools? Good for them. Their fan bases know the SEC schools. That's who they should play, in the regular season.

There is not a lot of incentive for most Pac 12 schools to play an ACC school in a home and away series. Unless you have some sort of special connection between AD's or the school Presidents it's a very, very long trip and moving the equipment can be a logistical issue depending on the game before and the game after.

In general unless you are Stanford, Duke, or BC you are not recruiting the other's territory.

As to the schools in Mississippi, even Georgia Tech did not want to go there when they were in the SEC. Hard core apartheid kept Big 10 and Pac 5/6/8 schools away.

Nebraska, Texas, Penn State, and several others at the top of the list used to buy a lot of games from smaller P-5's with no return trip. Everyone is up for a trip for Miami, and was up for such a trip for the last 80 or so years, not that many wanted to go to Pullman or Blacksburg or Corvalis. Travel from the late 19th Century to the 1950's was by train so that also factors into the numbers.

The UT-VT game was a blast for all parties. LSU fans on multiple occasions have talked about how great the experience was playing Wisky at Lambeau. Sometimes the games work, other times they don't. I can assure you everyone will be pumped for Bama v FSU in Atlanta this year.
