One does not study religions, to necessarily become more involved in a particular religion. Like I said earlier, any country like the United States needs some people to help us understand why some countries religions affect their actions or reactions. How many people knew of the Sunni and Shia conflicts in Iraq, before we decided to invade that country?

Actually, you are not saying something different than I said.

I do not know the undergraduate requirements at EMU for things like the humanities, but humanities are an excellent way to study comparative religions or even a specific religion.

I actually took a religion class as a guest student at MSU many years ago.

Lest I be wrong, most people do not fully appreciate the intertwined nature of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abrahamic_religions

I believe there is a real need for well educated people to understand these religions which have billions (3.6B per Wikipedia) of adherents.

EMU's Gen Ed requires two courses in the humanities with different prefixes. The entire gen ed structure can be found here: http://mobilecatalog.emich.edu/#custompage1
The Humanities portion can be found here: http://mobilecatalog.emich.edu/#programdetails1
The new Religious Studies layout is here:

Good stuff.

Earlier this year I was speaking with a Priest at Georgetown University about Islam and some of the tenets it shares with Christianity.

Dialogue between the faiths is getting to be a big 21st century phenomena.

For those who get into studying Judaism, Islam and Christianity, fascinating stuff. All have their roots in Abraham.

For one, the connection between Islam and Christianity is stronger than most Christians know. The Quoran has a chapter on Mary, mother of Jesus. I believe Islam considers Jesus a prophet and Mary a holy woman.
