I wonder why the cons haven't spent a whole lot of time talking about this story...

oh wait I know...(it's because it's a non-issue to them when a GOPer pulls crap like this).

That quote sounds like muh Hitler.

Respect my historical artifacts. It isnt raciss like a Robert E Lee statue.

I hear David Duke will be starting a new foundation called the Martin Luther King Center For Preservation of Black Culture.

Expect a lot of quotes.

Will sound just like MLK himself.

So what is it that you wish to see happen here? Maybe he could stick his head in one of the ovens? Would that be enough for you?

Pulls crap like what? How many people shoot pics or video of the World Trade Center grounds?

That, and had no idea of this story. More faux outrage...

Yea,

If our former selfie-stick in Chief had shot a few pics or done a 30 second video you can rest assured there wouldn't be a peep.

Jonny0, tell us, what rustles your jimmies about this? Cause DU or Salon said you should be OUTRAGED?!? This really bothers you?

Without approval to film and the Anne Frank Center and Memorial officials saying it's disrespectful... I'll defer to their objections.

IMO...Higgins was out of line doing this and should apologize. His general points in this video however are salient.

RE: Anne Frank Center calls GOP lawmaker's Auschwitz video a 'global disgrace'
First I will say Higgins made a major faux-pas and talked in a place of 'reverence' and he already apologized for doing so.

But let's not forget the Anne Frank Center has pulled off some boners on it's own in recent history (note: This does not dispute their message in this instance),

Most of these are cut/copies from The Atlantic.

1) Claimed for instance to have been founded by Anne Frank's father, but had no documents to back that up (reported by the Atlantic earlier this year).

2) They completely went political with one of their headlines when they claimed Sean Spicer said that the Germans didn't gas the Jews (note Spicer did screw up his statement he did make at the time and did so badly), and used that to accuse President Trump's travel ban of being anti-Semitic, stating and I quote (I'm still trying to figure that one out). "he [president trump] reiterated his lying demonization of Muslims as terrorists as an excuse to curtail religious freedom".

3) The guy that made this statement their Executive Director has ZERO involvement in holocaust studies,

In fact, last year Steven Goldstein (their Exec. Director) changed their "mission statement' from dealing with Anti-Semitism to dealing with "conventional issues'. (read SJW issues): "Will significantly broaden its work on contemporary issues to become a national leader in exposing and fighting hate".

4) and this is the big one:

Quote:The Anne Frank Center in the U.S. no longer sees itself this way. Rapaport, the organization’s new board chair, said it is neither a Jewish organization nor a Holocaust organization. Teaching about the Holocaust is “a valuable thing, but that’s not what we do,” he told me. “We teach about the thing that we think will prevent future Holocausts. … It isn’t our focus to be pro-Jewish or to be just a Holocaust-education [organization]. We want to use the knowledge of the Holocaust and go further.'

Quote:William Shulman, the president of the Association of Holocaust Organizations and emeritus professor of history at the City University of New York, was another adviser. He said the Anne Frank Center has been “inactive” in the association, which brings together all of the major Holocaust groups in America. The Anne Frank Center “[pays] their dues,” he said, “but rarely do we see anyone from the organization.” In general, the Anne Frank Center’s outspokenness is “an outlier,” he added. “There’s been universal distaste for doing this. … Our function is not to engage in politics. It’s to engage in Holocaust education, remembrance, and research. Anything that deviates from that damages our mission.”

Quote:In other words, it is a tiny organization in the process of reinventing itself. The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect and Understanding may not be a Holocaust organization or a Jewish organization, and it has an unclear connection to Anne Frank’s father. It may not have leaders with a scholarly background, a mass membership, or institutional standing among Jewish groups and Holocaust museums. But because it talks a big game and wields the name of Anne Frank, the media has awarded it authority it never earned

It's just something you don't do bubbapt in a Holocaust location. I know different people have different opinions on that , but when the signs say remain silent.. you really should.

It's sort of like the girl who put up a video where she was pretending to shower at an Auschwitz prison camp location and laughing about it. She took a beating for that one on social media and rightfully so.

I agree, but in this case it seems like it was an honest mistake with no intention of disrespect. Kind of like going on vacation to Japan and shaking someone's hand.

I was just taught to have some manners. Not sure it should be more than a one night story though.

are you kidding me? the dude added his freaking reelection campaign logo to the end of the video. this wasn't some "oh I didn't know I should remain silent." He tried to use a concentration camp in what amounts to a political campaign video.

RE: Anne Frank Center calls GOP lawmaker's Auschwitz video a 'global disgrace'
The GOP congressman used the site for political effect. There is no doubt about that. He shouldn't have done it.

To me at least, this brings up an interesting question. At what point does a heinous atrocity cease to be a lightning rod of emotional reactions and moves to being a clinical study of an historical time? We are 72 years removed since the camps shut down. Does the pain go away once the last surviving member dies? I'm not diminishing the evilness of the act, and hopefully we never see anything like this again. However, there is clearly a shelf life for these types of things. I don't turn into a blubbering mess if I visit a Civil War battle site, and I believe the Civil War was a very evil time for our country. More contemporary to this were the mass murders committed by Joseph Stalin and Pol Pot in the 20th century with Stalin's death count in the millions (1.5 mil up to 10 mil) while Pol Pot was 1.75 to 2.5 million killed. I have yet to see anyone IRL express strong emotions for these purges.

If you are a politician, the killing fields in Cambodia and the Gulags in Siberia are fair game... I can't help but point out the hypocrisy between the angst for the Holocaust vs the muted/clinical reactions to Stalin's Purges and Pol Pot's Killing Fields. In particular, Pol Pot's atrocities last occurred in as little time as 40 years ago! I would bet that no one would complain if any politician would have made a video in Cambodia at one of the genocide sites.

Then perhaps Hollywood and the DNC should drop about $40M to try to defeat him since that worked so well last time 07-coffee3
