Obsess all one will with PSU and Baylor, but how UNC is fighting back against the NCAA and leaning on procedural adherence is x100 worse.

You did something wrong, so own it.

Their argument isn't all that flawed, even if it's weak.

RE: [ESPN] Louisville and North Carolina to test NCAA
The power of the NCAA as a rule enforcement authority can only exist in so much as its constituents want it to exist ... or perhaps more importantly, want the illusion of it to exist.

Every major school wants to make sure that its respective competitors aren't "cheating" at academic eligibility, and aren't "cheating" at recruiting. But they all do it, to some degree. They want everyone else to get caught, but they don't want themselves to get caught.

The NCAA never was, isn't, and never is going to be like a government law enforcement or investigation unit, although some people seem to think it is or should be.

++++. 4 stars for you. The schools in the power conferences will always trump the NCAA. They control the money.

I am pretty sure that U of L is only appealing the number of vacated games, and the associated monetary penalty associated with that.

They are accepting all the other penalties the NCAA came back with, on top of the self imposed penalties the NCAA accepted ... so the 5 game suspension of Coach Pitino, the additional scholarships losses, the additional recruiting restrictions, the on campus recruiting visit restrictions ... all of those U of L is accepting.

Not that it is going to matter.

But figured that should be stated for the record.

Yeah, at least UL is taking some ownership of this.

UNC's just been flicking this off the whole time. Even kinda flicked off its accrediting body enough to get the probation. With that behind them, now that piece becomes ammo to fight the NCAA even harder.

It's not necessarily just the NCAA who should be doing anything. Like PSU, the conference should act, too. Don't tolerate this crap.

And honestly ... at this point ... I think you would find a great many U of L fans that would encourage adopting the UNC strategy, if they could go back in time and start this whole thing over.

There is NO favor in bending over, and working closely with the NCAA through this type of investigation.

Facts of the case as it stands today:

--- The Grand Jury failed to even bring an indictment against Katina Powell for all of her claims of committing crimes. Not enough evidence to even indict! That's unheard of. The common joke in legal circles is that a ham sandwich can get indicted.

--- The only other claims to the story she told came from student athletes at other schools, who testified under threat of losing their eligibility. What else were they going to say?

Knowing these things now, U of L should have fought the allegations, and made the NCAA show that they occurred. Not just accept them on their face, impose a punishment, and hope for leniency for doing those things.

They may have still been hit with sanctions, but the appeal would be a whole lot stronger when you can still point to all the flaws in the "evidence" against you. And then attack the ridiculous vacating standard the NCAA is trying to apply now. Which is all they have at this point.

This U of L case is showing the rest of the schools in the NCAA (you paying attention Ole Miss??) that you shouldn't cooperate AT ALL with them ... there is no benefit to doing so.

1) The recruits now at other schools were granted immunity for their statements.
2) If Louisville didn't cooperate then they likely would have been hit with the "lack if institutional control" penalty & that, in my opinion, is where the vacating of titles & wins should have come in.
3) Without the vacating of wins & titles I don't believe that the UofL would be appealing except for Pitino & his suspension & that's only because the NCAA appeals committee has already determined in the JB case that starting a suspension late in the season is improper.
4) IIRC, in the case of the wire transfer, it was Blakney guardian who called McGee to request prostitutes while they were in Louisville for an AAU tournament. McGee was an assistant coach in Missouri when this allegedly occurred & yet the UofL is being punished for this as well even though this supposedly happened at an of campus hotel.
5) Miami was charged with "lack of institutional control" for violations that occurred over a decade & involved a booster & multiple coaches, how many wins did they vacate? How many players were deemed ineligible for multiple seasons?

RE: [ESPN] Louisville and North Carolina to test NCAA
Until there is government oversight of college athletics, it will remain full of whores in business suits making the decisions that favor themselves and their schools, instead of the athletes and fans who love their school's athletics programs. Till that happens, college athletics is a sham that makes everyone rich but the athletes and fans who watch it.

Yeah, college athletes and fans get literally nothing out of the equation. Certainly not athletic scholarships or being able to watch their teams at home on TV with a very nice viewing experience (often better than reasonably affordable tickets at the game). Good grief ...

Not to mention free training, coaching, nutritionist, health care, room & board with meals & tutoring, for example.

The UNC argument is flawed. Their position is that the NCAA has no authority in academic matters. Yet, the first thing a school does is submit athletes to the NCAA clearing house to determine academic eligibility. In this case, the athletes took a "class" that didn't even meet the schools own standards. If taking that class away makes the athlete fall below the minimum number of classes to maintain eligibility, the school used ineligible athletes.

UNC will argue that the class was not "fake," just "easy," despite the fact that it didn't meet UNC standards. If that flies, look for athletes to start getting credit (at least NCAA credit) for watching TV and playing video games. Call the course "Pop Culture."

I agree with this, and IMO it belies the common notion around here that "vacating" is a joke punishment because 'those games have already been played, we all know what the final score on the field was, and the only things that matter are future-oriented stuff like scholarship reductions, coaching suspensions, future bowl eligibility and the like".

No, the truth is, when actual accomplishments are on the line, like conference titles or Final 4 appearances, or the ultimate, a national title, then that will motivate a school to appeal, because really, what is the ultimate purpose of future oriented stuff like eligibility and scholarships and having your coach on the sideline? That somehow it will all add up to winning something, to cutting down nets and hanging a banner.

So you really, other than something like a program-shutting death penalty, can't hurt a school more than by forcing them to take down a banner and return a trophy.

If we're cheating, we're not doing a very good job. The AAC should be winning national titles if cheating.

RE: [ESPN] Louisville and North Carolina to test NCAA
My brother-in-law, a graduate of UNC-CH, took one of the fake classes in question. He claims his academic advisor suggested it because it was easy credit and because a lot of athletes take it. He took that to mean they wanted more non-athletes on the class rosters, wink wink. He applauds them to this day for ensuring it wasn't just an athlete class and covering it up so long. He thinks the whole thing is funny.

As a graduate of a one of the University of North Carolina's other campuses not located in Chapel Hell, I am offended with what they did. I would be ashamed if I was a graduate of that campus and yet those grads I know all seem to think it is a big joke. If I was still an NC tax payer, not only would I be offended and ashamed, I'd also be angry.

And the baby blues are continually protected by the UNC Board, NC media, and state legislature while the other campuses (who educate most North Carolinians both in raw numbers and as a percentage of each student body) fight for scraps and are repeatedly denied the ability to start medical, dental, law, vet, and countless other programs. All because of their love for St Dean and his boy Roy and the rest of that crooked cabal of elitists on the Hill.

04-bow This post is 100 percent accurate. I am incredibly ashamed to be a resident of this state. The moronic simpletons that follow that university's sports teams remind me of a cult.
