It just got blown up when Zbo signed with the Kings.

ZBo is the GGOAT, but he was hardly central to any plan for continued success going forward. He's still a good player. But he's also an aging bench player that want's starters minutes going into what's probably his final big contract able to command way more money than we should be willing to pay for him.
Moving Gasol is the blow it up move because his contract (as opposed to Conleys') is cheap and he's one of the top 5 centers in a league without many elite centers.
It depends what we can get for Marc...if we can get 2-3 starters, we can be competitive.
Horford, Smart, and Crowder allow us to remain competitive. Playoff wise.

But the Celtics aren't going to offer the right deal.
Also, you don't move the best player to ever wear the Grizzlies uniform (ZBo may be "The Greatest Grizzly," but Gasol is a better player than ZBo was in his prime) just because a guy that was an assistant a year and half ago thinks he should take a bigger leadership role.
Wow, what a strange shot to take at Fizz - "an assistant a year and half ago"? What does that even mean?
1 and 1/2 years ago, Markelle Fultz was a high school senior in Maryland. Today, he's the #1 pick in the NBA draft and an instant multi-millionaire. Things change fast in the NBA.
Fizz is going to be the coach here a long time. Fizz wants to create a Miami Heat culture. Marc will either adapt, or he will move on.
I've read when an NBA coach has a problem with his best player the problem tends to be solved by release of the coach.
typically said player is usually a superstar
Marc is not that
He's not, but he's also thick as thieves with our other big contract and second best player. And coaches are just not that valued in the NBA culture (probably undervalued imo). If the two really couldn't stand each other they'd move Fizz over Marc and if they did move Marc for picks as part of a rebuild, Fizz will probably (and would be smart to) take the first opportunity to get out of town to avoid coaching what will probably be some ugly years.

We probably aren't a lottery team, and if we are, we're most likely to be late lottery.

I would say talk to Boogie Cousins. Or Dwayne Wade.
Probably talking 10% chance this trade gets done, but if I had to choose who has more power right now in the Grizz hierarchy, I'd pick Fizz over Marc.
Ok, thanks.

Depends on what we get back in the trade

Correct. And protected 1-6 in '20. Then would go fully unprotected in '21 if not yet exercised.
BTW, I hate all these protections. Makes it harder for teams to makes trades, since can't trade #1's in consecutive years.

Forgot that Marc has a 15% trade kicker, which makes a trade even less likely.

Just have to make the money work somehow. Maybe with a third team
I will pull a Clay Davis (from the wire)...
You start with the New Jersey 2018 pick.

No sense in trading him now. Better to wait and see how the early season goes for both teams. If the season is going bad then you can explore it. But I doubt Chris Wallace wants anything to do with trading Marc Gasol.

Celts trade Avery for Marcus Morris, saving about $3.8M in salary this year. So looks like the opportunity for the Grizz to participate as a facilitator for Celts to clear space for Hayward has passed.
Another good move for the Celtics. Ainge will not give up those trade assets. Gets Hayward, keeps Jaylen Brown and Tatum, and still could have 2 top 5 picks next draft.
