Kimball Theater Closes Jyly 6th
Nothing to do with our Tribe sports, but many will be interested to know that the Kimball Theater, movie location for tens of thousands of W&M students since 1933 and, I'm sure, all on this board, is being closed down on July 6th by Colonial Williamsburg.

It will only reopen if CW can find either a leaser or buyer...and no guarantee it will be as a theater.

CW, in the midst of a vast economic reorganization, claims the Kimball lost 800k in the past year.

It will be missed by many.

CW lost over 50 million last year. I can't say that Kimball was a big part of it.

Doubt it will stay closed long.

CW used it primarily as a performance space, when it should be primarily be used to show critically acclaimed film and/or cult classics. Art-house theater in a college town is a standard institution and Im sure there is some organization that presides over these types of facilities to be contracted.

Alternative would be a rock-concert hall that sold alcohol and had indie bands. Nothing like that in Williamsburg. Doubt CW allows that though.

Saw some great (Easy Rider) and not so great (The Reivers - not Steve McQueen's best work) movies there.

Fall 1978, my senior year, I was interested in a fellow student on campus, a junior. The Kimball was playing The Sound of Music which I liked well enough and knew that the women liked it too. So I invited this girl to that movie -- and boy did I step into a huge heaping steaming mass of good fortune with that move. Turns out that it was (and still is) her all time favorite movie. The rest, as they say, is history. We celebrate 35 years of marriage this October. THANKS KIMBALL THEATER!!!!!!

Some outfit with some imagination will come in here. It's critical to the block. I too have lots of memories of the Kimball.

I remember going there with some friends to see The Omen, starring Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. Only movie I saw there but it freaked us out, we were up all night reading the Book of Revelations.

I remember seeing cult classics there where everybody in the theater knew the words. It was fun, but is probably due for some renovations at least.

I remember going to see the Shining there. It came out well before my time, so it was pretty cool to experience it on the big screen.

I didn't know what the poster was talking about since it wasn't called Kimbal when I was in college.

Colonial Williamsburg signs lease with William & Mary to operate Kimball Theatre

William & Mary will use the location for theatre instruction and performances as well as performances by other university groups.

This makes a ton of sense. Glad they were able to put it together so quickly.

A great move by the College. Not only benefits W&M as starting next year Phi Bete will be shut down and the first stage of a large new W&M Arts Complex built (making it unavailable for two plus years,
but we do the town of Williamsburg a big favor that will go over big with everyone..

Hope W&M will continue to run the great arts films too.

Theyre supposed to tear down the Campus Center and likely with it, Trinkle Hall...which was often used to play movies etc. Kimball would work perfectly as a replacement.

This definitely makes it easier to reboot the Campus Center. What a nightmare layout that place was. How many 60s/70s era buildings will we have left to renovate after this?
