New Mexico too. BYU and New Mexico are the 2 highest ranked "G5" programs who play FBS football over past 4 years.
"G5's" this year (School's that sponsor FBS football)
BYU #31 Indy
New Mexico #61 MWC
Air Force #65 MWC
Tulsa #68 AAC
Boise St #71 MWC
San Diego St #74 MWC
Navy #75 AAC
UNLV #80 MWC
Hawaii #81 MWC
Eastern Michigan #82 MAC

UTEP #83 CUSA
Houston #84 AAC
Cincinnati #85 AAC
Akron #88 MAC
USF #90 AAC
MTSU #91 CUSA
Uconn #92 AAC

You missed Kent State at #63 who has also been the highest ranked MAC school almost every single year this award has been given (and typically has a very good score).

I apologize. I looked at the link provided on this thread to copy down the order of finish of every non-cartel school (they have to play FBS football) I'll look at the list and see where Kent St is and insert them in.

I'd like to see this list culled down to a simple "relevant sports cup". Football, Men's Basketball, and Baseball should all account for 5 points each. And then one point each to the following sports, which do have real (but niche) followings: Women's basketball, M/W Indoor/Outdoor Volleyball, Golf, Lacrosse, M/W Soccer, Gymnastics, Olympic Track and Field TEAM ONLY

Everything else is bogus.

Boom!

Another quick indication of the relative strengths of the conferences

Both the MWC and AAC have 6 full and the one football affiliate (out of 12 total)
MAC has 3
CUSA has 2

Sun Belt has zero, which shows they are really just a low-level DI conference that happens to play FBS football.

In your opinion. Non-football schools would like Football to not count.

Baseball fits into your niche sport category - just because it is a southern dominated sport doesn't mean it is any different than those you are listing.

RE: 2016-17 Learfield Directors' Cup Division I Final Standings
I like looking at these standings to see how members of a single conference compare to each other, and maybe how potential expansion targets would fit in. So to revisit one of this year's realignment stories, what's the pecking order in the Big West and how might UCSD have fit in?

Rank School Score
81 Hawaii 248.50
103 Long Beach St. 194.00
133 Cal State Fullerton 123.00
199 UC Davis 68.00
205 UC Irvine 60.00
208 UC Santa Barbara 58.00
233 Cal Poly SLO 46.00
252 Cal State Northridge 25.00
NA UC Riverside 0.00

UCSD is a Division II school, so comparing their score is very much apples and oranges. Still, the Tritons finished fourth out of 312 Division II schools. By comparison, UC Davis won the Division II Directors' Cup six times and was runner-up twice before moving up to Division I. So maybe UCSD would slot in somewhere around the middle of the Big West near the Aggies.

What about Cal Baptist and its upcoming move to the WAC?

Rank School Score
158 New Mexico St. 94.50
213 UMKC 50.00
243 Seattle 30.00
252 UTRGV 25.00
287 Cal State Bakersfield 19.50
287 Utah Valley 19.50
NA Chicago State 0.00
NA Grand Canyon 0.00

The Cal Baptist Lancers finished second in the Division II Directors' Cup. I'd say they have a really good chance of competing for top dog in the WAC.

Actually the MWC and AAC have 7 each out of the top 20. The Belch does have 0.

That is what I said 6 FULL PLUS 1 Football Affiliate (Navy and Hawaii). Not sure appropriate to credit either Navy or Hawaii to AAC and MWC since majority of points (if not all) came from non-football sports.

Oh, I got ya. You are right. I just saw conference listed next to school, copied it down with out snapping that Navy and Hawaii are football only schools in those conferences.

Why isn't ECU in the rankings anywhere?

Did they make the post-season in any sport? Because the schools that don't earn any points aren't listed in the final standings spreadsheet.

ECU got 0 points. I believe this was the worst year in ECU athletics ever.

RE: 2016-17 Learfield Directors' Cup Division I Final Standings
Denver at #35 is a pretty cool story for top non-football school for the 9th time in last 10 years. This year included an astonishing #4 in Capital One Cup for men finish behind three final fours appearances including the men's hockey NCAA title and final four appearances for men's soccer and men's lacrosse, as well as Top #3 in Skiing, #9 in women's Gymnastics, and more NCAA tourney appearances for Swimming, w, volleyball, tennis, golf, etc.

Might be the best performance for the athletic buck in the country.
