favorite US city to visit
It's the summer so.....

My top 5:
1. NYC - greatest city in the world. I'd live there if I had enough money.
2. NOLA - short flight from Dallas. A city with soul, great food and nightlife.
3. Seattle - love the vibe and such a beautiful city.
4. SF - quirky, great and full of interesting people.
5. Denver - scenery and stuff.

My #1 and #2 is NYC and NOLA too. The rest? Meh. If you like Colorado, get up to see Yellowstone. Mind-blowing is an understatement. Not a city though, more like a Mecca for the lover of nature and all things purty.

RE: favorite US city to visit
Travel is too hard because I like different places for too many different reasons. Here's the top 5 cities I'd be willing to move to.

Los Angeles- Get off the beaten path and you'll find a city full of interesting neighborhoods, great parks, and good food.

Portland- It reminds me of a rocky mountain mining town but with bigger city amenities. Powells Books is reason enough.

Boston- I've lived there before and I'd move back. Winter sucks though.

Dallas- Don't tell anyone from Houston but moving to Dallas would be easy because the two cities are more similar than they are different. Dallas is my second favorite city in Texas.

New York- I've lived there and wouldn't move back to Manhattan or Brooklyn, but a commuter suburb in Westchester County would suffice. Beautiful homes, beautiful area, and a quick train ride to all the noise and chaos away.

I'd classify cities in 3 groups.

1. Worth checking out for one evening.
2. Worth a 3 day weekend.
3. Worth a week stay.

I've been to Louisville a few times for long weekends. Nice for a chill weekend.

New Orleans is a place you can go every few years as a get away.

NYC every visit is totally different depending on where you are staying and what you are doing.

Great thread. I like my city (Portland) quite a bit, but there a few I love to hit.

1. NOLA - The food, the music, the history. Yeah, you right!

2. New York - You can immerse yourself in so many different cultures in one trip. I've come to love Queens of late. I spent a full day last time I was there eating Pakistani, Tibetan, and Afghan food, and seeing few other white people.

3. San Francisco - I probably put in 12 to 15 miles on foot a day when I'm there, finding hidden gems in the Mission, Chinatown, etc.

4. Santa Fe - the galleries on Canyon Road can easily envelope a full day. Plus, if I had an IV with green chile pulsing through it, I'd be a happy man.

5. Minneapolis - sneaky great city, and imminently bikeable. Love to bike from brewery to brewery.

I've lived in LA and I loved it. You're right about great neighborhoods - Silver Lake, Fairfax and Culver City are three of my favorites. I'd probably still live there if a 2/2 house in a decent neighborhood didn't cost a million bucks. Also, I don't miss the traffic. Dallas traffic sucks but LA is the worst I've ever experienced and nowhere else is even close.

I agree with you about Dallas and Houston. Once you get past the unreasonable hate each city has for the other, they are very similar and both great places to live.

Chicago is the one city I left off my list that I love to visit, and I'd live there. The winters would be tough though.

Its a three hour drive for groceries, but its worth it. Don't need no stinkin city when you live in one of the most beautiful valleys in the world.

The older I get, the less I like cities, although I have been to every state in the union.

My top 5 places to visit are outside big cities:

1. Yellowstone

2. Inside Passage Alaska

3. Big Sur

4. Maui

5. Maine coast

If I'm forced to visit a big city, I prefer:

1. New Orleans

2. San Francisco

3. Tampa/Clearwater

4. Memphis

5. Las Vegas

I also like Charleston, SC and Savannah, GA.

Kennecott. Been there. Stayed in McCarthy, toured the mine and hiked the glacier. It was one of several stops on our honeymoon along that highway. I remember that exact view of the mountains rising above the trees. Damn I love Alaska.

1. Seattle - The mix of sea, islands, and mountains is second to none. Climbed Rainier there this time last year. I want to try sailing there.
2. Jackson, WY - The best outdoors town in the world. Expensive to live in, and pretentious at times, but Grand Teton is the best National Park in the US. Going there this weekend.
3. Denver
4. Austin - I like to imagine hearing SRV blaring his guitar out of one of the bars there.
5. Santa Fe - love the art and the food.
