I think the law is specifically different for the pres and vp when it comes to threats.

I doubt the law is, but certainly the SS will be way more diligent in taking these things completely seriously when it comes to Pres and VP.

But I don't expect them to get involved here as this is pretty harmless in the grand scheme of things IMO.

Legit threat, or not (I don't think for a second this clod is actually "threatening" anything), probably not a good idea or good timing a couple of weeks after a mass assassination attempt and one of the House leaders still in the hospital...

What happened to the lefts call for "unity" and toning down the rhetoric after that attack?

I agree with your general line of thinking, but I must disagree with the bolded. Buying a gun and buying a ticket to Washington are both things I want to remain legal to do in our country. Doing both things is not indicative that you want to conduct any violent or illegal activities.
