That was the problem with the big east. Their *best* team was ranked #25 but they still got to play in a BCS bowl. Most other conferences had to have their teams somewhere in the top 15 (if not the top 10) to go.

No, not really. It was that year for sure. But most of the time, a highly ranked WVU, Louisville, or Cincinnati won the league. Cincinnati was actually in the top 5, before losing to Florida in a bowl after Brian Kelly left. WVU would have been in NC game if they hadn't lost to Pitt. The performance of the Big East most years, was actually better than the perception.

Rankings of the Big East BCS bowl teams in the BCS era:
15 Syracuse
2 Va Tech
3 Miami
1 Miami
1 Miami
9 Miami
21 Pitt
11 WV
6 L'ville
9 WV
12 Cincy
3 Cincy
25 UCONN
23 WV
21 L'Ville
15 UCF

Before the ACC raid, the big east was in fantastic shape. After, the product declined until the last 4 or so years when it tanked.

Exactly what I just said. Before UConn, you had a final ranking of 11, 6, 9, 12, and 3 in the previous 5 years for an average year end ranking of #8. That's pretty good, and better than the perception that the BE was a terrible league. And by the way, that #23 ranking for WVU after UConn's year is suspect in that WVU then routed Clemson 70-33 in a bowl.

The Big East was a good football League. However, they were very shortsighted by staying at 8 all those years. The BE should have added at least UCF and TCU back in 05 (if not outright going to 12 FB members) when USF, UL, and UC were added...and they may have been alive today. The Big East also should have accepted the ESPN mega-deal back in 2011 when it was offered. Huge mistake. Pitt headed up the decision to reject the deal...then promptly backdoored their way into the ACC behind the scenes.

Terp fans deserve a piece of this thread. Edsall was the biggest train wreck that program has ever seen from a culture and recruiting standpoint

TCU, Houston, and UCF should have all been in the league way before the split. The hoops schools wouldn't allow the football schools to get the numerical advantage though. I think that was short-sighted. The New BE may be doing okay, but I think there could have been a true defined P6.

Yep, totally agree. Hindsight is 20/20, but obviously the BE should have 1) admitted TCU, UCF, Houston, and 1 more (Navy?) back in the 2005-2008 time frame, and 2) accepted the ESPN megabucks deal in 2011.

Both of these were doable. We know that the BE was on board with going to 12 FB schools, had the B12 imploded when several schools almost went to Pac.

Pitt spearheaded the rejection of ESPN deal, then went behind BE's back to beg for an ACC invite, leading to exits by WVU, TCU and others.

Hopefully edsall will get uconn back to the point where it takes double overtime to beat a 6-6 team?

That 2010 season saw Temple throttle UConn 32-16. Temple went 8-4 that year, yet was not invited to a bowl game. Yes, it still rankles.

A couple writers speculated that, but there wasn't anything concrete. USF only had one vote of 16, so if the other 15 members wanted UCF in, they would have been in. USF voted for UCF in 2011/12 when BE expanded. Point is, UCF should have been added when USF was added. USF wouldn't have had anything to say about that. The other problem was, BE was trying to add the likes of Villanova for football, instead of doing a real expansion.
