RE: New EMU AD is...
Great Info. Looks like a great hire, and he's definitely saying all the right things........... BUT........ according to this article, the Regents still have not even approved the building plan.

.......while Creighton expects shovels in the ground in 6-7 months?????

Dear EagleTough,
I think the reality is, first things first. Now that an athletic director has been hired, the move to continue forward on the athletic facilities should be one of the top priorities. Mr. Wetherbee has stated in his introduction, that he was in support of this endeavor. I also think the board of regents now want to hear his ideas, proposals, concepts, on how best to achieve the end product. I can't believe that with approximately one-third of the funds already raised, that the project is left to die.

Absolutely agree with every word you just said Ken.

Just wondering how the Creighton statements fit? Hopefully Wetherbee/Smith/Creighton/Regents can work very quickly to make sure Creighton doesn't eat crow.

Agreed.

Happened to be in Ypsi with some friends and did get some info.

What I learned that this was advertised and was, in fact, a true national search.

Apparently President Smith said to the effect that he didn't need a national search to hire the AD where he was previously.

I also have reason to believe that Spears would not have been happy with that approach. If he was not selected then he would have been in a very uncomfortable sport.

To me, this was: Hire Spears (Y | N)? If the decision was 'Y" then no reason to have a national search.

If 'N", then it would have been a bad, bad spot for Spears.

Just did not see this as a situation where Spears would have been one of four finalists and hope to be selected.

I wish Smith would have handed Spears the job, but that was not the way Smith wanted to handle it.

But I think it made it a foregone conclusion that Spears would not apply.

Good insights Steve! I think Spears would have been a good choice to maintain continuity. But I am not disappointed in the choice of Wetherbee, comes with a strong pedigree. He just needs to move the building project forward.

"Wetherbee is taking over an athletic department that has its significant challenges, financially and performance-wise, playing in the shadows of the University of Michigan."

Certain media outlets just can't get over it and continue to imply that EMU is the only school with financial issues.

Dear WoodenNickle,
Absolutely right. The article is still rehashing the HBO program, and the articles written by our friend Jesse. Let's hope that Eastern will continue winning and build the new athletic facility. Then maybe the press will start writing positive articles about Eastern, but I doubt it.

In fairness to the writer, you have to give context and can't just reference issues and not state the issues. I think it was a more passing glance than in the past and the HBO story is getting further and further in the rearview mirror for both the media and the general public.

Agree, Dave.

Writers tend to write like this, "after many years of losing (rear view mirror context statement) the 2016 EMU team posted a winning record and received its first bowl bid in over 25 years."

That introductory phrase is NOT meant to be negative, but context to compare the losing ways of the past with the current successful, turnaround season.

Folks should not try to be too sensitive.

It is no different than a statement like: "After the Great Recession, which saw millions of Americans lose their jobs and homes, the country made a slow, steady economic recovery and now has a low unemployment rate and a fairly strong housing market."

Dear Friends,
Athletic Director Scott Wetherbee starts his new job at Eastern next week. From the brief interview, he is ready to go. Let's hope Eastern athletics continue to move in the right direction.
