RE: OT: Chesapeake on track to be 2nd largest city in VA
I don't have kids and don't live in Virginia anymore. When I did live in VA I lived in Norfolk off Granby St not far from Wards Corner in an area called Cromwell Farms. It was a great middle class neighborhood. Nice neighbors, shady streets, 4th of July neighborhood parades, working people who generally kept their yards up etc. If you're not on the Lafayette river waterfront you can probably still get a house there around $200k. People talk about the schools, but the folks who had kids in my neighborhood actually raved about Granby HS. Evidently there is some kind of honors program that is very good there. I have a buddy who lives in Larchmont, which of course is a great neighborhood as well, though it was out of my price range. He sends his kids to Maury and was very satisfied as well. Seems a lot of it depends on who the kids become friends with and what programs they take advantage of. In many ways, thats a lot like ODU too. Anyway, I don't have the answers, was just wondering your takes.

What rural scenery exists at all in Norfolk??? If you're talking about in Chesapeake/Suffolk/VB, it's not Norfolk's fault if development in that city causes development in other cities.

You misunderstood me. I am regretting the development of rural land in Chesapeake. Norfolk needs redevelopment and investment in an urban setting. Chesapeake doesn't.

If a dev around here wants to build new homes and parking lots he should do it in Norfolk where it is needed to replace old developments not tear up the rural landscape to make new developments in Chesapeake.

It's a short sighted decision by Chesapeake to allow this one time revenue influx at the expense of the natural beauty and atmosphere of the community. In 50 years these housing subdivisions will be derelict, vacant and enormous drains on the tax base. And they will still be a blight on the landscape.

Where do you propose that the people in the neighborhoods being redeveloped go? New neighborhoods are being built because inventory is needed. Its not like there are large tracts of vacant land in NFK where developers can just go build a new neighborhood.

I'd consider Norfolk if I worked there and made somewhere North of $250k so I could get one of those large West Ghent houses or a waterfront one off North Shore or Lakewood, afford to send my kids to Norfolk Academy or Norfolk Collegiate, and afford the ridiculous property taxes and flood insurance. Otherwise, Norfolk doesn't have much going for it if you are over 25 and middle or upper-middle class.

Well yeah if you want a big yard and a big house in an urban city then you're gonna be paying a lot of money.

I myself enjoy the ability to walk/bike to almost anywhere I need to be, sans job, as well as the larger emphasis on arts, culture and entertainment. VB/Chesapeake are great if you have kids and want to live in the suburbs, but I find suburbia to just be terribly boring.

These priorities often change with age / stage of life. I was in the same boat as you for a while, and loved living Downtown, but now I am itching to get to a house with a yard and some room to spread out.
Same here. Lived in downtown or Ghent from '01-'07 and enjoyed it, but it is no place to raise kids. I'm old school and enjoy sending my kids outside and locking the door until dinner.

War cry, help save Great Bridge football and Friday night lights. The team is on the brinks of collapsing due to low enrollment and rezoning. The current team has 20 players heading in to August camp.
Hello GBHS Football Supporters, Great Bridge Wildcats
Please plan to attend the July 10th School Board meeting to address any and all GBHS Football concerns as they pertain to the facility, enrollment, and future of our program. We would love to have a large group there including band, cheerleading, alumni and anyone else who'd like to come out and support!

IMPORTANT: To speak at the meeting, you'll need to either call the Clerk of the Board's office at 757-547-1047to request time to speak or arrive closer to 5pm the day of the meeting and sign up to speak. Speakers are given up to 3 minutes.

Meeting specifics:
Chesapeake School Board Regular meeting
When: Monday, July 10th at 6pm
Location: Chesapeake School Administration Building, 312 Cedar Road, in the multipurpose room

I remember someone asked me to come play wr back in the day because they needed people. Did all the good kids move a few streets over to grassfield?

Posted from mobile device. Hopefully it's coherent.

I was a freshman punter on varsity but we had over 70 players late 90s early 00s. School enrollment was north of 2300 now its right around 1400. The zoning lines for GB are kinda whacked because of Hickory and Grassfield.

I was asked my sr year, the year after the split. Probably lost folks. That's pretty telling how low gb is now.

Need to just rezone the entire area and be done with it.

Tonight it sounded like there may be some emergency rezoning coming. https://pilotonline.com/sports/high-scho...cd59f.html
