USF Baseball Coach (Hired by South Carolina)
I saw he was on campus yesterday. How is he as a coach? He seems to have a decent record but I was surprised to see him interviewing for the job.

RE: USF Baseball Coach
He is an excellent coach. He was also looked at by VTech and Alabama. But last I heard he was staying put and his contract was being increased.

he makes peanuts at USF and has done a fantastic job. If USF can increase his pay it'd be a nice job for him. Good location and good facilities.

None of our schools can match money wise and what SC baseball offers

I wonder what we offered him? Chad was only making 400k a year.

I think it was rumored USCe was planning to pay upwards of a mil so I agree no AAC school could match that, especially for a sport that doesn't draw much like Baseball.

That said I think USF coach was dead last or near there in the American on coach salary. If he wasn't going to USCe he would have been going somewhere else with how poorly he was paid at USF. Kingston made $140K at USF so he should be in line for a huge payday -- well deserved too.

USF shouldn't have a problem finding a replacement, location and facilities are top notch.

They were going to pay over a million but that was only for a proven coach (Florida, TCU, UVA and Louisville were the main ones rumored to get that type of money). I would be shocked if Mark is going to get anything over 600k since Holbrook was at 400k. Now that number will easily go over 1 million if he proves to be a stud at USC.

agree this seems likely. Probably 500-600K. I think USC could have gotten sullivan from Florida until he won the chip. Tough break because he also is a great coach, obviously.

Yeah that was what we were leaning towards. Once he won we knew it wasn't happening. Plus Florida is doing a major renovation to their baseball stadium.

USF has promoted pitching coach Billy Mohl to head coach. Great move he was the man behind the pitching recruits and improvements under Harlan at Illinois State and USF

I like this hire a lot. A lot of cross pollination going on. Mohl is a Tulane alum.

Sounds like a great hire for USF and one they could get on a budget. Win/Win

Yes, he did a great job, and best of luck to him.

Once SC was seriously interested in him, there really wasn't anything we could do. As you say, SC has the SEC money, facilities, and a program that won national titles in the past few years.

As with the loss of Taggart, losing successful coaches is just an inevitable situation as long as we are stuck in the G5.

I think Leavitt would have been USF's Bowden... before getting fired.

SC has all that + more money. No brainer.

I always enjoy an internal hire after a new regime has turned a program around.
It's fun sorting out the Franchiones from the Pattersons.
When a new culture has shown a high level of success, it can be counter productive to start from scratch. There's no reason USF has to miss a beat like Tulane did. Of course, if there isn't such a desirable inside guy you're left with no other choice.
