Top 10 for basketball? OSU has been really good for two brief periods in the last 20 years- other than that they are as often outside the top 25 as in.

And regarding academics being "elite" for a public school. Seriously that is gilding the lily a bit. I would say OSU is competitive to get into for sure, but definitely not elite. I understand they may get high numbers in the school "rankings" - but those rankings are driven by things like research, funding and a few elite graduate programs the majority of students never know exist, much less benefit from. For the typical bachelors degree program student, I would say OSU is "above average".

Elite is a tough word to quantify but for a discussion about public universities OSU is at least very very good. By most metrics OSU is ranked between #10-15 for public undergraduate universities. UC typically falls in the upper half of the #75-100 bracket.

Good catch. I call elite public universities Cal-Berkeley, Michigan and Virginia. OSU is probably in that next tier; very good still but in my mind, not elite.

Someone better remind the ACC that Louisville isn't elite academically. Oh, and remind the B12 that WVU is in the same boat.

My only point (as we've bantered about for many of these 1,776 pages): UC measures up to the P5 in terms of academics, research, endowment, and enrollment. Basketball/football performance has also been very good for more than a decade; ranked many of those years. Facilities are now catching up. But a P5 conference must have a need to expand. That's the pathway UofL and WVU followed. When that happens, everyone should like Cincy's chances.

Well yeah cal Berkeley is on the level if not better than many Ivy League schools and Stanford. Michigan competes with notre dame and northwestern. Virginia and North Carolina are elite top 25 US schools. Then I'd say the next tier is right under elite and still above very good. You have to remember many elite students don't want to go to a small private school and often times will choose (Half Big Ten, Florida, Texas, Georgia Tech etc.)

Here's how I'd rank publics:

Tier 1
Cal Berkley
Michigan
North Carolina

Tier 2
Georgia Tech
Illinois
Purdue
Texas
UCLA
UCSD
Virginia
Washington
Wisconsin

Tier 3
Florida
Maryland
Minnesota
Ohio State
Penn State
Pitt
Texas A&M
William & Mary (only for undergrad)

Tier 4
Arizona
Colorado
Georgia
Indiana
Michigan State
NC State
Rutgers
UC Davis
UC Irvine
UC Santa Barbara
Utah
Virginia Tech

Cincinnati would be in the next group, but it's a much bigger group.

I will admit to not knowing the metrics that well, but I thought schools like Georgia, NC State, and Virginia Tech were more on our level academically.

Noone cares how you nerds rate universities academics. None of you are even remotely qualified to make such assertions lol. And besides, academics have absolutely nothing to do with realignment or our bb/fb goals.

If the UC AD wants to make a case for realignment all they have to do is start winning national championships on a regular basis.

That would flip the script.

Winners make $$.

$$=exposure.

Exposure=blue chips and an elevation in the performance of the revenue sports.

That's it.

If you paid even the slightest bit of attention, you would know that there are multiple posters who work in higher education.

That's good stuff. Does UC really only have 25,000 undergraduate enrollment?
