MyBB Is Georgetown a basketball blue blood?
If not, why?

30 NCAA appearances
11 Sweet Sixteens
9 Elite Eights
5 Final Fours
1 National Championship (3x runner-up)

Allen Iverson
Patrick Ewing
Alonzo Mourning
Dikembe Mutombo
Roy Hibbert
etc. etc.

Elite private institution in the nation's capital.

Secondary question, what keeps them from being permanently elite in basketball?

Not enough titles. They were only a couple shots away from 3/4 too. Win those and they are probably on the right side of the rope.

RE: Is Georgetown a basketball blue blood?
No. The only universally recognized Blue Bloods are Duke, North Carolina, Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana and UCLA.

Georgetown does not have the resume of those schools, the $$$$, the following, etc. In fact Georgetown is behind other schools knocking on the door (ie. Louisville, Connecticut, Arizona). What's more, Georgetown hasn't been Georgetown since Big John left and are falling even further down the hierarchy.

RE: Is Georgetown a basketball blue blood?
my thought is they're probably just in that 2nd tier. The 30 appearances sounds good- but it's only looking good enough for 20th all time. The 5 final 4's- good enough for tied for 15th.

This is one that 10 years ago, I think you could make the case that they were. but the last 10 years- really since the final 4 in 2007- haven't been kind. Only 6 bids and 3 wins in that period- vs UMBC, Belmont, and E Washington. Losses to Ohio and Florida Gulf Coast in that period(among 5 losses to double digit seeds). Hopefully with JT3 being gone things will change.

RE: Is Georgetown a basketball blue blood?
So all of this brings me to my second question --- why can't they sustain it the way those in the second tier have been able to? ie. L'ville, Cuse, etc.

They have some of the best facilities in the country, play in an NBA arena, sponsored by Jordan brand, located in recruiting hotbed, prestigious academic institution.

Is it because of JTII?

I think a LOT of it is JT3. I'd say 90%.

Georgetown had mediocre facilities up until 8 months ago when it opened the Thompson Center.

It's all about the coaching. Craig Esherick (Big John's longtime assistant) was a mediocre head coach when he took over. JTIII really fizzled out at the end of his tenure.

They held onto JT3 IMO 3 years too long. I think they should have gotten rid of him after the 2014 season where they missed the tourney(on the heels of the Florida Gulf Coast loss the prior year).

I'd 2nd this.
