Former PAC 12 Network executive says network doesn't compete with SEC or B1G
She more or less states the obvious...

PAC 12 Networks don't compete with SECN or BTN

It's interesting to hear the remarks nonetheless though. The article also goes on to talk about how PAC 12 officials were expecting more revenue out of the deal.

Nice find. The link to Scott's comments was also interesting. You have to wonder if these releases are getting their public ready for a changeover. The question would be given the track record would ESPN or FOX even be interested? They have to be under pressure to make a decision soon. They can't afford to be unattractive when Texas and Oklahoma decide on a future home.

The PAC 12 can't compete with the ACC or Big 12 either....

There are a couple comments on the main page regarding a XII/PAC merger. The idea I think the PAC would prefer is a group of "power leftovers" to add content so they wouldn't feel forced to add G5 programs to grow their network. I would presume the XII powers (Texas and Oklahoma) would prefer more Eastern-based conferences.

SEC + Oklahoma, Oklahoma St
B1G + Kansas, Connecticut
ACC + Notre Dame, Texas, West Virginia, Cincinnati
PAC + TCU, Texas Tech, Kansas St, Houston

This leaves out Iowa St and Baylor (although I get the feeling Iowa St may find a home.)

8/10 XII schools have a home which dissolves the conference. The PAC gets a huge boost with 3 Texas schools - not sure if the SEC would fight this. The SEC gets a large brand. The B1G gets a cultural fit in Kansas and another hand in the Northeast in Connecticut and both are basketball household names. The ACC finally gets Notre Dame all-in and Texas with 2 other decent regional brands.

I think the ACC would not be able to add both Texas and Norte Dame as full members. Giving Texas a partial adds 5 more games to the inventory.

I think the ACC would not be able to add both Texas and Norte Dame as full members. Giving Texas a partial adds 5 more games to the inventory.

Well, to put it another way, if Texas joined the ACC in full they would insist upon travel companions, at least two of them, but 4 would be more likely.

Texas can't afford a full ACC schedule without a good number of their usual faces on their home schedule.

If Texas goes independent for football they will either:
1. Stay in the Big 12
2. Get an Indy deal with the ACC and keep their minor sports in the Big 12.

Either would be a pain in the rear.

This is why the original plan ESPN had for the ACC made more sense. Let North Carolina State and Virginia Tech (duplicated market schools) move to the SEC with A&M and Missouri and the ACC creates a Western Pod with Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, and likely Miami. Notre Dame joins in full. Quite Frankly it would still work if we both moved to 18.

ACC: Cincinnati, Texas, T.C.U., Texas Tech, West Virginia to 18.
SEC: N.C. State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Virginia Tech to 18.

That way everyone joins in full. Here are your divisions:

ACC North: Boston College, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse, West Virginia
ACC Atlantic: Clemson, Duke, Louisville, North Carolina, Virginia, Wake Forest
ACC Gulf: Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Texas, T.C.U., Texas Tech.

SEC East: Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, N.C. State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech
SEC Central: Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt
SEC West: Arkansas, Louisiana State, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M

The reason OU stays in the SEC in the 18 member scenario is they will insist on OSU. That way both OU and UT only have to use 1 OOC game to keep the RRR and their normal rivals with them. If Texas resumes with A&M then that becomes their second OOC game.

The resultant SECN and ACCN footprints would have enough overlap to be bundled together. The ACC gains branding and the SEC gains more markets. The ACC might lose two schools but none that impact their ability to generate more conference revenue.

Texas could just rebuild the B12 with MOuntain West schools.

OU and OSU to SEC
KU to B1G
WVU to ACC

Returning Big 12: Texas, Tech, Baylor, TCU, KSU, ISU
New Big 12: BYU, Boise St, Houston, Colorado State.

On second thought, if the Big 12 lost those four schools, moving Texas and four more members to the ACC might. E a better option.

RE: Former PAC 12 Network executive says network doesn't compete with SEC or B1G
I believe the talk of a PAC 12/Big 12 merger originates with the Dude. Which means it's total bunk.

I think the PAC clearly wants Texas and truly needs UT and OU. At this point though, I'm not sure what those schools have to gain by going that direction.

I think OU and OSU are likely to end up in the SEC at this point. Not sure what happens after that.

Personally, I think the PAC is locked into an inferior status. Their network will never be as profitable as the SECN or BTN. Their fans are not as passionate and demanding of content. Geographically, they are basically protected from being raided and they have a culture all their own to reinforce unity.

So I could see the PAC sticking at 12 for a very long time.

Until maybe one day when I suppose there could still be a unified college sports league of all the top brands around the country. But at soonest, I think we're several decades from that.

Last I read from him he was saying WVU might have the votes to join the ACC. I don't see how unless ESPN tells the ACC who to add this round.

I agree about the PAC.

Let me throw out a message board heresy here. Let's say that ESPN decides not to lease 50% of the PAC material and they drop their interest in the Big 10. They now have (without having to increase their overhead) the money simply to create two 20 school conferences:

Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Kansas, Iowa State, West Virginia and Texas Tech to the SEC.

Baylor, Texas, T.C.U., Kansas State, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, to the ACC.

SEC:

Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia

Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt

Arkansas, L.S.U., Mississippi, Missouri, Texas A&M

Iowa State, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech

ACC:

Baylor, Kansas, Louisville, Texas, T.C.U.

Boston College, Cincinnati, Notre Dame, Pittsburgh, Syracuse

Duke, North Carolina, N.C. State, Virginia, Virginia Tech

Clemson, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Miami, Wake Forest

Now ESPN owns everything of note from Upstate New York to Boston and throughout the Southeast through the Plains and Southwest. They have two conferences to push and enough channels to bundle and market them both. The GOR and exit fees disappear.

The SEC picks up 1 national football brand, 1 regional football brand, 1 national basketball brand and 3 more solid basketball programs and we add 12 million people to our footprint and pick up a second Texas school.

The power structure of the SEC is not affected other than by OU.

The ACC picks up Texas and Notre Dame fully as national brands in football. They get a solid middle tier sports program in Cincinnati. T.C.U. puts them into DFW and Kansas State is a respectable football addition. And if Baylor reforms they are respectable in all sports as well.

I would be happy with this lineup. I would think that Iowa State would replace Kansas State though.
