Smu will score many points this year! Their problem is defense. I can see SMU finishing 2nd in the west.

Didn't realize quinton flowers was 74.2% of usf's offense last year. What would they do without him.

This will be my 25th year of being a SMU football fan and I have been conditioned to be inherently negative

RE: Phil Steele - % of yards returning
79% of our receiving yards return (top 3 WRs)
60% of our rushing yards return (Ryquell Armstead is better than Jahad Thomas too)

Basically supremely penalized for losing our starting QB.

jhg, losing Phillip Walker is a big deal. He was a 4 year starter, and very successful. Our next QB will have zero starts at FBS. I have confidence that the right guy will get the job, but there will be a learning curve.

104. Houston 46.5%
108. East Carolina 40.7%
119. Navy 31.3%
123. Tulsa 27.0%

So those are the skill returnees. Here were the OL returnees:

Nat'l rank School(conf rank) Career starts

4. MEMPHIS (1) 103
5. UCF (2) 101
13. TULSA (3) 91
22. HOUSTON (4) 86
30. SMU (5) 80
57. UCONN (6) 68
72. TEMPLE (7) 61
93. ECU (8) 46
108. USF (9) 40
115. TULANE (10) 37
116. NAVY (11) 36
119. CINCINNATI (12) 32

Memphis is Top 10 nationally in both returning categories. From a Top 25 ranked offense a year ago (15th in scoring, 28th in yards per game).

No wonder our TV partners have chosen to highlight the Tigers this year, (and people are picking them to win the division):

UCLA at Memphis on ABC
Memphis at UConn on ESPN - Friday
Memphis at Houston on ESPN - Thurs
Memphis at Tulsa on ESPN2 - Friday
Memphis at UCF on ESPNews
ULM at Memphis on CBSSN - Thurs
Tulane at Memphis on CBSSN

I'm guessing their Navy and SMU games get televised as well.

RE: Phil Steele - % of yards returning
Haven't read the rest of the posts, but just wanna put in my two cents here... UTSA is listed as #8, with 91% returning. That can't be true though because Sr. RB Jarveon Williams had 900 yards from scrimmage for us from rushing alone. So even if you don't count his receiving yards (which may fall under QB yardage), his rushing yardage alone accounts for about 18% of our yards from scrimmage. Furthermore, even if you count punt and kickoff return yardage, Jarveon's percentage only drops down to about 15% of our offense. I have no idea how Steele arrived at us having 91% of our yardage returning, looking at Jarveon Williams' stats alone. So even though these numbers are fun to look at, the discrepancy with our data makes me question all the rest of it, and you guys might wanna double-check your own stats.

From the link in OP:

"I took all of the yards each QB threw for as well as all of the individual rushing yards and receiving yards for each team."

Sounds like receiving yards were counted twice (once as passing, once as receiving).

Why not?

Because you're right - we are still swiss cheese on defense and were one of the worst teams in the country on special teams last year. How we do in those two areas will tell how well we do this year.

Right now Memphis has the more complete team. Great find though - thanks to gulfcoastgal for posting.
