Epic ignorance on display at ESPN. Respect for the Anthem, the Flag and the troops is not politics. It’s patriotism, respect and love of country. Anyone who doesn’t understand that simply shouldn’t be allowed to babble away on a nationally broadcast TV show. This is exactly the reason why millions of people no longer watch ESPN.

Quote:Thursday, ESPN “First Take” co-host Max Kellerman shared his reaction to Seattle Seahawks defensive lineman Michael Bennett comparing free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick to boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

Kellerman admitted the two athletes are very different, but said the two are similar in that neither “went out looking for a protest.”

The ESPN personality then argued that Kaepernick did not inject politics into the NFL, but rather the NFL injects politics by playing the national anthem and “putting pressure” on people to stand.

Partial transcript as follows:

“Colin Kaepernick also did not go looking for a protest. It came to him. He was asked to stand for the national anthem. You do not have to stand for the national anthem. And even if it it was a rule that you did, is that Colin Kaepernick injecting politics in the NFL? No. That’s the NFL injecting politics by playing the national anthem and putting pressure on you to stand for it in the first place.”

I would argue your ignorance is on display. The NFL didn't start bringing players out during the anthem until fairly recently. they sure as s*** commercialized patriotism (and got paid by the armed forces for doing so). so the criticism is totally warranted. spare me the faux outrage.

They are actually perfectly in touch with America. They know exactly how people will react. And everyone plays into it.

We learned all about this from you lefty regressives. You taught us well...thanks.

And you ***** and moan about what we do.

Right...we're not different, that's my point! It would just be nice for once if some of your right-wing brethren would actually see or admit that. Instead of playing like they hold some sort of moral high ground in the whole thing.

And it's stupid because it's not even really criticism. Max is not totally wrong in what he said...and this little snippet of what he said likely doesn't reflect the whole conversation as this was a minor part of it that Breitbart wanted to make a mountain out of for its flying monkeys.

People getting up in arms about anything somebody says on First Take is hilarious in the first place.

The whole show is designed for two guys to say controversial things that spark viral hits. You're playing right into it. It's the lowest common denominator of all of the ESPN properties - it's sports talk radio on TV, just without the idiots calling in because the hosts are doing all that work without Joe Schmoe having to say it.

I'm not defending anything. I don't watch First Take because it's a waste of brain cells. Getting worked up over anything they say is asinine.

The fact that people keep giving this show any kind of attention is the part that's baffling to me. While ESPN does lots of great journalistic work, I avoid First Take like the plague.

I guess they knew I'd stop watching and subscribing to traditional cable. They (and the prima donnas) have driven me away from caring about sports.

They knew that people would still participate in the argument regardless of their subscription status. It's alternate revenue and also a good way to keep advertisers.

I'd also venture to say that you didn't get driven away from sports, just driven to a new one. Politics. It has gotten a lot of us.
