RE: Composite rankings preseason of all 130 1-A schools
Rice University is undoubtedly an outlier in our conference, and I'm not just talking academically. As a former member of the Southwest Conference, and facing P5's like Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Arkansas, TCU, and Baylor in all conference sports, they (like Houston and SMU) once brushed shoulders with the 'big boys' before the Southwest Conference dissolved in 1996.

So I can't help but think that their scheduling tendencies might, in some aspects, reflect a feeling among the Rice brass that since they were once part of something much bigger, perhaps they want to continue facing that caliber of schools when possible. I can imagine it must've been like a punch in the gut to the likes of Houston, Rice, and SMU to be cast aside at realignment and essentially be demoted to a G5 designation after such a distinguished association and history.

The older Rice Owls' alumni on this board can certainly speak more on this than I can, as I'm doing a bit of psychoanalysis here, but it almost seems as though there's something nostalgic to Rice Football supporters who've supported the program for at least 2-3 decades to face the programs they were once associated with. And perhaps they seek them out more often than the rest of us do because we've never at any point been a member of "The Club".

To be fair isn't UNT one of those gimme wins? Lets be honest the only fans excited about UNT going to a bowl last year were UNT. A 5 win team should not be bowling. Other than the 2013 season UNT has been one of the worse team in FBS over the last 12 years. Just as I said...gimme win.

I guess this is the post where I point out to the WKU folks that our all time record is knotted up at 4-4, despite all of the games taking place in the aforementioned decade of suck. And it took the best two teams in the history of your school just to tie it up.

I think you pretty much hit it on the mark... I think it's a balance. I think the idea of OwlAtTheMoon's idea that we schedule this way to win the national championship is a bit far-fetched, but I would much rather play the teams we play OOC than other lower-tier G5s.

I think there are a lot of good academic institutions in C-USA, but the reality is that there is no institutional commonality between most C-USA or Sun Belt schools and Rice. So well it may be in our best interest athletically to schedule say, ULM (after 2019 of course 03-wink), most Rice fans/students would rather see us play Stanford. And it's not because we're academic elitists and don't want to associate with "bad" schools (a few Rice people have that attitude, not me). Rather, I know more people who go/went to Stanford (9 off the top of my head from high school, internships, family, friends etc) than I do ULM (0). Most Rice students know a couple people from their high school (if they are from TX which is only about ~40%) who went to UTSA or UNT. But most of their friends who went to state schools went to UT or A&M. In other words, it's more fun to play those teams. I can go to the game with friends from both schools, can harass them if we beat them miraculously, and if we lose, I have a bunch of excuses I can fall back on... If we play ULM, I can't go to the game with friends from both schools, I feel bad if I harass them in victory as we have more resources, and have no excuses to fall back on if we lose.

If we had a halfway decent coach/team, this would be an awesome schedule. Home games vs. a service academy and a top 25 opponent (Stanford was supposed to be at home not Australia originally). Away games vs. a local G5 (UH as part of H&H) and a middle of the road P5 (Pitt, would prefer if $ game swapped for a more local team like Texas Tech).

OK! and what does that have to do with anything you or I posted? Before you start calling other schools "gimme games" you should make sure you're not one yourself. The programs you point to all started football...let me repeat that STARTED playing football in the last 13 years and both have as good or better record as UNT over that span.

As for Western...you keep beating your chest on that head to head. But lets be honest that has to be the weakest come back to ever take place on a sports board 03-lmfao You should be ashamed to even typed that.

One of those doing just that is Rice...be lucky to get 1 win out of the 4

08/26 - Stanford (in Australia)
09/16 - at Houston
09/30 - at Pittsburgh
10/07 - Army

Nothing wrong with this schedule. The problem is the program under Bailiff and Karlgaard.

No shortage of threads on scheduling local rivals (Houston). Another thread is critical of the North Texas move to drop Army. Stanford is the back half of a home and home, and maybe the move to Sydney raises cash for the Bailiff buyout. The only buy game is Pittsburgh, a P5 that a good G5 should beat.

I am not sure who Bailiff could have on the schedule, short of Prairie View A&M, that would be a Rice win this year. Better the losses come to good opponents rather than Sunbelt bottom feeders.

Rice (like any program who aims to compete for the conference title) schedules to position for the playoff. I'm not saying we'll run the table in OOC this year (we won't) but we won the league in 2013 and we'll win it again. If we have a playoff caliber team one year then we'll have the schedule to prove it on the field and the (biased) CFP committee will have a hard time keeping us out.

Meantime our 2-time defending league champion has Vandy, Illinois, Ball St, and Eastern KY. That might get you the G5 access spot, if you can manage to beat Vandy and Illinois. But you're already locked out of the playoff.

Last year Houston ran the table OOC against two true national contenders. They did the hard part of being the first G5 to make the playoff (just couldn't seal the deal in conference)

We've got the same number of weak P5 wins as WKU this decade (3) and since our 2012 Bowl run started we're 7-1 against teams currently in the other top G5s (MWC and AAC). We do ok "scheduling 'up'"

We schedule like we intend to represent the conference. If WKU keeps their program strong would love to see you guys teeing it up every year. Hell you played Alabama tougher than about anybody a couple years ago, and took on LSU last year. I know it's hard to schedule that kind of program every year but it's too bad you don't have somebody like on tap this year.

This is the first year in a long time we don't have a Bama or LSU on the schedule.....We have schedule up just one year hiatus from playing the Bama's of the world...Don't worry we have LSU next season, Wisconsin and others in the future...

I understand your argument, I just wanted to point out that the first season (2013) in the C-USA, FAU did go 6-6, but, unlike the last couple of seasons, this did not get us a bowl game.

Best way to keep up with scheduling

http://www.fbschedules.com/ncaa/conferen...edules.php

I understand why Rice wants to schedule like they do....I'm just a firm believer you schedule to your talent level at least 2 out of the 4. Take the one shot and then try to find a very winnable P5 game that will play you home and home or two for one. Then schedule two games you should win.

I love the way Western has went to scheduling regional schools that are mostly under a 5 hour drive. Even the pay check games. The Wisconsin game is farther away but Western got a home and home in basketball out of it. Plus a big check...at the time it was signed, this was the highest amount Wisconsin had paid a G5 team.
