Tulane to offer sailing as a women's sport - 15th DI program
sportsnola.com/sailing-become-tulanes-17th-varsity-sport/

No doubt Tulane has an endowment to do this, but why not something like women's lax? In sailing, only USF and Stanford compete outside New England and the Mid Atlantic.

Guess getting more sports for wealthy gals is the name of the game to bring in their parents money.

But the move smacks of indifference to getting mbb and fb, which the AAC badly needs to do.

Not many girl's lacrosse players in Texas and Louisiana? Low cost sport? Though beach volleyball is probably even lower cost.

What do you mean "getting mbb and fb, which the AAC badly needs to do?" The conference obviously "has" both sports ... guessing there is a word or two missing.

Getting much better. Those were the words I thought were in there.

This, x100

In the last 4 years, Tulane has built a football stadium, basketball practice facility, hired a new football HC, a new men's basketball HC, and a new athletic director. Plus moved up from C-USA to AAC. That's a lot, and I don't think anyone denies that we are giving it our best shot in those two primary sports. Women's sailing and women's bowling (yeah we give scholarships for that, too) are just extra, and provide an extra cushion when the Title IX inspections come around.

Anybody have a list of obscure NCAA soorts ? Sailing and a few others I didn't see listed as NCAA sports are NCAA sports obviously.

I think this is great news, I've all ways wondered why there were no sailing schools on the gulf coast ? , Galveston area alone could have
UofH
Texas a&m at Galveston
Texas at Galveston
Heck even rice, if they wanted to.
The entire gulf coast from Cancun all the way around Texas , Louisiana, miss, ala and on down to the Florida keys so many schools and the Mexican schools too should all have sailing schools and compete in the 19' class, would be awesome, so my hats off to tulane, you go girls...

I think this is great. Not everything has to go into the football arms race.

From a quick search, it looks like sailing is governed by the separate Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association. You'll find that model with a fair number of sports, like rugby or even ultimate frisbee. Although rifle is NCAA-sponsored, so they go both ways. The thing that would make this list hard to maintain is that the non-NCAA bodies tend to govern both varsity teams (that answer to the athletic director) and club teams (that answer to the student government and/or the student affairs director), so you might only want to know about varsity programs. For Title IX purposes, it doesn't need to be an NCAA program, it just needs to be varsity. The courts did rule against Quinnipiac that a varsity cheerleading program doesn't have mature enough forms of competition to count.
