RE: Baseball Search
I don't know Danny Clark and he sounds like a fine man, but I have some questions about his resume that were not mentioned.

What was Danny Clark's record as head coach of Milligan? How many championship did he win on the college level?

What FBS or FCS school has he been the head coach or asst. coach?

RE: Baseball Search
You'd think being hired and retained as a minor league pitching coordinator for a franchise partly ran by Nolan Ryan is enough for a resume. But apparently not.

He has been an assistant on the NCAA D1 level working as pitching coach for ETSU. Also worked at Brevard (NC) when it was a JUCO then transitioned to NCAA DII. No he has not been an NCAA D1 level head coach. He has been a head coach at the NAIA D1 collegiate level - Milligan College. As Milligan College head coach for six years (2000-2005) his record was 188-143. His teams won 2 AAC (Appalachian Athletic Conference) Championships and finished in top 2-3 practically every year. According to Milligan College's records which go back to 1910 (107 years) they have won a grand total of 4 conference championships in baseball. Two of those were during Clark's tenure. They have won zero since he left for the Texas Rangers in 2006. The thing that makes Milligan such a tough place to win in athletics is the academic standards their athletes must adhere to versus many of the other conference counterparts lighter and less stringent admission requirements and academic expectations. Think Vanderbilt vs the rest of SEC on a much smaller athletic scale.

Hope that answers your question buc73

RE: Baseball Search
Sander and Carter have been on different pages since this search began. One wants an older established coach and one wants a young and hungry assistant type.

They slow played Esposito, who wanted the job, and basically blew off his interview because they thought they had Marc Rardin in the bag.

They offered Rardin $90k, which is a joke and $65k for his staff. Rardin asked for a whopping $100k- and they told him he could have that but it would come out of his staff budget. So he pulled out.

Meanwhile Esposito is interviewing for the Wichita State asst job, which pays more, and ETSU won't return his calls.

We go after Danny Clark. Clark is interested and has a ton of support pushing for him to be the guy. He asked for a reasonable salary but again Sander and Carter couldn't get on the same page. So Clark pulled out.

Then they went back to Rardin and offered him $120k, $20k more than he would have taken the job for two weeks ago. But he's already gotten a raise at Iowa Western, so as of two days ago he was sticking there.

Esposito, a guy who can recruit his @ss off, finally got frustrated w the lack of communication and feeling like he was a bridesmaid-- took the job with Wichita a few days ago according to Twitter.

So its true this hasn't been a good look. Sander and Carter look like two guys running around the bar 10 minutes before closing time looking for someone to take home. All the pretty girls got bored with their lines and went home with someone else. And now I feel like we are about to end up with a fat chick.

HaHa. They used to look pretty on the dark dance floor of the Crows Nest around 3AM too, until you made your way up the hill to Perkins for a late midnight snack or very early breakfast then all of the sudden you would realize you weren't that hungry. 04-jawdrop

RE: Baseball Search
Yes, bad look all around. What role is McGahey playing? Isn't he a baseball guy.

I think Sander and crew are just out of touch with the college baseball landscape. In our league, i know for a fact that Mercer, Western, Samford, UNCG, and the Citadel all pay their HC over $100k. There are assts in this league who make over $65k individually and we are going to pay that to two. And yet, we believe we are going to hire a proven, established, veteran coach to come to a facility without locker rooms and lead us to the promised land for $90k.

Bad look.....and getting worse

RE: Baseball Search
Joe Pennucci from Stony Brook. I don't really have an opinion on this. Will just wait and see

RE: Baseball Search
If this is our guy - Joe Pennucci - he sounds like a pretty solid hire to me. Stony Brook made the CWS in 2012 (he's coached there since 2007), and the team has been dominant in their league. Also sounds like he's ready to be a head coach and can recruit. I just returned from St. Louis and watched a Stony Brook grad (Tom Koehler) pitch for the Miami Marlins vs. the Cards just last week.

I hope it works out. Other than men's basketball, baseball is my favorite sport and I would love to see ETSU have a quality program. I have heard that there are coming improvements to Thomas Stadium to make it an even better facility, and perhaps a good coach could improve the product on the field. Hiring Clark would have improved attendance by itself, this guy will have to start winning to build the program's profile. I wish him well.

RE: Baseball Search
So we could have hired South Carolina's recruiting coordinator and an assistant coach who won 2 CWS titles three weeks ago-- but we waited patiently so we could steal Stony Brook's assistant coach?

JUCO coach, multiple JUCO natty's.
South Carolina asst coach/recruiting coord-- two natty's.
Well respected Texas Ranger's coach/Local boy

Stony Brook assistant coach (obvious choice).

Bravo.

Can't wait to see us pull in all the upstate NY talent. They'll love East Tennessee.
