I didn't start watching the Rockets until Cullop was here, so I didn't realize how successful Ehlen had been for a while. Now I understand better why some fans have been complaining about Cullop's performance over the past few years, even though from my viewpoint she has done a great job.

The Blade article only briefly mentioned that Ehlen's last four years were a struggle. What happened? How bad were things? Any explanation as to why the wheels fell off?

He was fine as far as the standards of other MAC schools, but he wasn't winning according to Toledo standards.....

He just couldn't get the players. I will say that he did a good job of getting Big Ten type players to visit, but couldn't close the deal. I think when he didn't sign Dawn Zerman, who desperately wanted to come to UT and went on to be the best player ever at Kent, that seemed to be a turning point.

Ehlen's early success at UT IMO can be attributed to 1 factor - that Fennelly handed him Kim Knuth. So in other words, right place, right time. I maintain that to this day, she remains the best player to ever play in the MAC.

UT won at least 24 games in each of the 4 years Kim played. In Ehlen's other 9 seasons he averaged 15 wins per year and had losing records the last 5 straight. Cullop has not has a season with fewer than 16 wins.

I also don't understand his remark about the great recruiting class he left for Cullop. That class was Ingersoll, Aubry and Gipson. Aubry and Gibson were gone after 2 seasons. Granted, he did recruit Clifton, Williams and Goodall who all performed well under Coach C, but if Cullop had not added Naama and Tanika Mays that might have been a pretty dismal 1st season.
