Rolling Stone will reportedly pay $1.65 million to settle a defamation lawsuit from a University of Virginia fraternity, whose members they falsely accused of raping a woman in a debunked 2014 article.

A person involved with the national level of Phi Kappa Psi told The Daily Caller that Rolling Stone had agreed to pay the settlement by Aug 31.

Is that going to be one epic party.

Should have been a LOT more than 1.65 million.

They got off easy.

$1.65M? Peanuts and probably most goes to legal fees.

Sad thing is that the person who fabricated the fraud in the first place got off without paying a cent.

the "victim" was not the cause of this. it was a reporter with an agenda looking for a fratenrity-rape story, found her, and pushed the story. the victim did not go around looking for a reporter it was the other way around and that reporter went digging where the "victim" didn't want digging to be done.

it's not spin it's factual. the "victim" wasn't looking to turn this into a story. the reporter was and that's what caused this fiasco in the first place.

if you want to say false-rape claims should be imprisoned then no false rape allegation will ever be recanted not to mention the legitimate rapes that will go unreported.

I don't think she should necessarily be jailed. But having to write a check wouldn't be a bad idea. I would hope that no false accusation gets recanted because none gets made. That would be the best result.

again. the victim who didn't want the case to be reported on should have to write a check because a reporter highlighted the fiasco? It was rolling stones who made it a story of national significance. the victim only circled it around a couple of friends.

and if you really think this won't prevent recants then you are ridiculously out of touch. I also love how you don't address legitimate rape victims being inclined to not come forward which you KNOW for a fact will happen.

No matter how you like to spin it this is some saudi arabian level **** because it incites an atmosphere where women should be discouraged from reporting rape even when the accusation is legitimate.

I think one professor or administrator also mentioned in the story got $3 million, so 1.65 for the frat seems low.
