I think I am going to have to agree with you on this. One thing that could influence this however would be the outcome of Graham's meeting with Karlgaard on his status.

What meeting are you referring to?

From what I was told he and Karlgaard are meeting since Graham only has one year left on his contract. I am not sure if Graham is going into this fighting for an extension or how Karlgaard feels about giving him one. Karlgaard is usually too busy to worry about baseball so it is tough to read his feeling for the most important sports program at Rice.

RE: MLB Draft
Do I remember correctly that the odds of a player drafted in the 6th round or later actually making it to the Show are less than 1 in 10?

To me, 1 in 10 would be a shockingly high percentage.

I did not hear that, but I would think they would certainly be less than 10% Think of all the uber talented players we have had and few have made it to the majors - fewer still have had more than a passing affair with the majors.

This. That said, here's additional granularity:

Quote:1st Round
The first round of MLB’s first-year player draft represents the cream of the crop, the top talent within the United States.

Still, by no means does that guarantee that those players will reach The Show, as only 66 percent of first-round picks play in the major leagues.

2nd Round
After the first round, each subsequent round features a significant dropoff in the chances of reaching the major leagues.

For those players drafted in the second round of the draft, the chances of reaching the major leagues drops to 49 percent.

Rounds 3-5
Rounds 3-5 are a major turning point where the odds begin to drastically decrease, as only 32 percent of players drafted reach the majors.

Rounds 6-10
And the likelihood of playing in the major leagues continues to worsen, as only 20 percent of players drafted in Rounds 6-10 reach The Show.

Rounds 11-20
The odds nearly slice in half from Rounds 6-10, as only 11 percent of players drafted in Rounds 11-20 reach the big leagues.

Rounds 21-40
Although there is less conclusive data considering the new collective bargaining agreement slashed the draft from 50 to 40 rounds this year, the chances of a player drafted after the 21st round reaching the major leagues is a slim seven percent. (It’s probably less now that 10 rounds have been cut from the draft.)

I would also wonder whether the changes to draft caps for first 10 rounds has changed any of this math.

Astros draft Trei Cruz in 35th round (undoubtedly knowing he's committed to Rice).

#Astros draft Episcopal SS Trei Cruz (@CruzTrei) grandson of former Astros star Jose Cruz n 35thround.Trei signed to play at @RiceBaseball.

Quote:Trei Cruz: "I was a little shocked; excited though. My grandpa is my role model. I want to follow in his footsteps; do everything he did. I'll probably end up going to Rice. It's still super exciting to know I have the opportunity coming. Hopefully, in three years I'll be 35 rounds higher by the Astros. Extremely huge honor. We'll see where we go in three years."

Well said, Trei!

We look forward to seeing you on the field at the Reck next spring (and this fall)!
