Slow Summer thread II (or what to plunk away at while watching the march towards Omaha on TV, all the while avoiding work you need to do around the house)

Ok, what are the best and worst promotions your (or any school has had?
And/Or, what are your ideas for a promotional events at your school?

RE: One word: Promotions
I think GCU has good promotions that get the students excited- beach night, USA night, t shirt giveaways, ugly sweater, etc.

Nevada doesn't do many for some reason. They did a cyber Monday sale for the Fresno or San Jose games.. or both.. I forget. But the SJSU game had over 10k at the game. I think of you drop tickets to an insane low amount you'll get a ton of people buying them up and they're probably the type who wouldn't buy a ticket for $20 because it's too expensive, but wouldn't think twice about dropping $50 at the snack bar.

I know that the color coordinating promos never work because people would rather wear a brown GAP coat instead of a blue/silver/white.

Free Chick-Fil-A after an opponent misses both free throws is always fun. Gets pretty loud. Happened once when I went, think it was against Grand Canyon.

RE: One word: Promotions
One promo I recall was mainly due to the fact that we played Fullerton and that had a nightmare of a game. We won big, and so, all were in great mood for the glow in the dark Easter Egg hunt alter the game.

Another I recall was a contest, sponsored by a local jeweler for a pair of diamond earrings after the game. Diamond Run I think it was called. It was vrs Fresno St. Again, I recall this because...I got a free t-shirt out of it. I hoped it might turn into an annual event, but it was a one time deal.

Of course, there's the now renowned Lengthwise Trivia Twitter contest each game for $20 from Lengthwise Brewing!!! That's my personal fav! No surprise to you here. COGS

One promo I'd like to see is where a fan can select the between-inning PA music for the game (subject to censoring graphic lyrics, Im sure).

Seattle U had free tickets to a future game of your choice if you bought tickets to a game. Like a buy 1 get 1 free. That was pretty nice

My favorite one that GCU has done was the very first soccer game my freshman year they did a soccer scarf giveaway. That game I began to like soccer as the women's team beat NAU 3-2 in extra time.

I was also fan of the coin GCU soccer gave season ticket holders last season to commemorate the opening of the new stadium.

Sac State used to have one where everyone was able to come onto the court at halftime and line up for free throws. If you made one you got a dollar. Helps we have a middle school gym.

NMSU used to do a Tuition giveaway if you made a half-court shot. They also had a "Black Parking Sticker" which let you park anywhere on campus. I do not remember what you had to do for that one.

One that did not happen was when Bobby Knight came to town with Texas Tech they said they were going to do a chair throwing contest, but they cancelled it. I also seem to remember a Lobo piñata that you could wack for like $.25 a swing.

RE: One word: Promotions
A few years ago for MBB NMSU had a season long theme called What Will they do next. One game they gave away 10 free flat screen tv's. They gave away 20 pound turkey's at thanksgiving. They had the Zooperstars as a half time act. There were some pretty cool things they did that year. There were also some pretty lame things that they did that season too. However they never made it known what promo was going on during which game. It never moved the needle attendance wise. IMO this was all done by the marketing guys at the time to save their jobs. Up until then they only marketed game via social media. Never did a whole lot promotion wise. They never did any promotions for games like that until it was announced that the AD at the time was not getting his contract renewed. It was known that those guys sat around watching TV and only doing their jobs a couple hours a week. After six months on the job our current AD had evaluated his department. He made it known to people to shape up or ship out. 3 of the 4 marketing guys chose to ship out.

RE: One word: Promotions
Best promotion (when we were UTPA): the ticket stub got you a free pizza at Pizza Hut if we scored over 100 points.

Other good ones (mostly UTPA): cheerleaders throwing Whataburgers into the stands after 3 point shots; one random student getting to try a $10,000 shot from 3/4 court.

Worst one: lengthy half-time shooting contest against another team of contestants. Used to get you a bottle of off-brand BBQ sauce - one bottle for the whole team - but I guess the budget's short or the donor fell through 'cause now it's just "hearty congratulations" from the announcer.
