I will never forget that day. Not just the first game at Jerry Richardson Stadium, but also the first game in Charlotte 49er football history. In front of a standing room only crowd of 16,600 (plus another coupe of hundred watching from outside the stadium including from classroom building ledges up the hill), Charlotte's Mark Hogan scored on the 2nd play from scrimmage, a pick 6, 46 seconds into the game. The crowd, already amped up, lost its mind, as did our radio play by play crew. It was a day years, maybe even decades in the making, and the 49ers didn't disappoint, easily dispatching the Mike Minter coached Camels.
I wonder if we are the only program to score their first TD on a pick 6?

We scored our first FBS points on a fumble 6, I would imagine both are pretty unique.

A crowd of 33,116 was the latest in program history and would remain the record until 2005 when Marshall hosted Kansas State in its first home game as a member of CUSA.
The 1991 team is the team that started "The Decade, The Dynasty" tradition at Marshall. The 1991 team would go on to finish as I-AA National Runnerup to Youngstown falling in the title game. Marshall Stadium would then be selected to host the next five I-AA National Championship games, with Marshall ultimately winning two of them.
What I remember about that day was leading up to it. The ramps were mud, and we walked up and down that muddy ramp all through two-a-days (and three-a-days). We worked out of Gullickson Hall, where the players used the PE locker room, and the laundry and game uniforms were both still at Fairfield Stadium across town - the managers drove over every night to do laundry, unloading four large baskets of clothing by themselves, then reloading about midnight and taking back to Gullickson to pass out in the locker room. Our day-to-day was in a small room (where Henderson Center equipment area is now, and a room across the hall, used for awhile as the tennis office).
We had port-a-toliets under construction lights in the unfinished building on game day. But the best thing of all that first night is we sent players over in three groups - specialists, then skill guys and finally linemen and dressed out frosh and walk-ons. We walked the three blocks to stadium right through the crowd, which was hammered for the 7 p.m. start and many had been going since Friday afternoon, parked all over the place.
When we got to the stadium, I looked back first at a red sunset going down in the west end of town, then turned my attention to the standing room only crowd that roared its welcome as the Herd gathered and took the field from the building. I'd be lying if I said after 15 years of games at Fairfield Stadium about having tears in my eyes as we took the field to a gigantic amount of noise. Last second play to stop New Hampshire's final drive and save the 1-point win, and the team went clear around the stadium shaking hands with fans in all sections before heading back to Gullickson Hall to change and celebrate the opening win! What a night!!

UTSA
Alamodome
We played our first game against Northeastern State on September 3, 2011 at the Alamodome. With attendance of 56,743, UTSA set a record for the highest-attended game for an NCAA Division I FCS start-up program.[27] UTSA finished their first season with a record of 4–6, and set a record for the largest average home attendance for a new football program with 35,521.[28] This topped the previous record from South Florida of 33,038 in 1

There had been club games, but UAB's first NCAA DIII game at Legion Field was September 4, 1991 against Evangel. Blazers lost 10-28 in front of 5,132 fans.
Still stands as the third highest attended game in UAB history. A historic day indeed.

I would....
a lot of fans wont get off their butts or spend any money on "their team" but on a message board they are "hard core"
