2017 MLB Draft (June 12-14)
The MLB Draft gets started on Monday and lasts thru Wednesday. It will take place in Secaucus, NJ.

Per Baseball America, we have 2 players in their Top 200 draft prospects list. Incoming recruit, SS Greg Jones from Cary HS, is ranked # 82 (he's also ranked # 84 by MLB.com). Josh Roberson is ranked # 192.

Expect Jones to go in the first 5 rounds and for Roberson to be taken somewhere in the first 10 rounds. I would also expect that neither will end up on the 2018 Seahawk roster as a result. But that's the cost of our program bringing in higher-caliber talent than ever before.

Other draft-eligible Seahawks or potential future Seahawks include the following to look out for:

* OF Casey Golden (Sr.)
* C Nick Feight (Jr.)
* OF Robbie Thorburn (Sr.)
* 2B Brian Mims (Jr.)
* RHP Austin Easter (Jr.)
* IF Terence Connelly (Gr.)
* 1B Mason Berne (Jr.)
* OF Kep Brown (r-Fr.) --> From Miami and Spartanburg Methodist
* RHP Nick Jodway (2018 freshman)
* RHP Landen Roupp (2018 freshman)
* RHP Gage Herring (2018 freshman)
* RHP Brody Lawson (2018 freshman)
* LHP Kevin Mintz (2018 freshman)
* OF Brycen Braswell (2018 freshman)
* OF Noah Liles (2018 freshman)
* OF Noah Bridges (2018 freshman)
* 2B Douglas Angeli Jr. (2018 freshman)

RE: 2017 MLB Draft (June 12-14)
BA dropped Roberson to #369 and Greg Jones is now #75. For some reason they have left their top 200 prospect rankings posted yet not updated when they released their top 500.

Also of note, from the state of NC, BA has them ranked.

#8 Greg Jones
#24 Nick Jodway
#25 Josh Roberson
#35 Nick Feight
#39 Casey Golden
#41 Brian Mims

Interesting, so they have Jodway as a stronger prospect than Roberson now.

The first 75 picks of the draft (Rounds 1 & 2 plus compensatory) will happen tonight, starting at 6. We'll see if Jones hears his name called tonight during "primetime" or waits until Day 2.

Golden ahead of Mims and barely behind Feight. Who'd have thunk that a year ago? No disrespect to Golden, who I always thought highly of, but a year ago it looked like Feight and Mims were big time prospects as sophomores. A catcher and 2bman with huge offensive numbers, and in Mims case at least, a guy who was highly though of defensively. What the heck happened to everyone (except Golden) offensively?

Keep in mind that Golden, as a senior, comes cheaper than Feight would as a junior. So teams would be more willing to take Casey a little higher, knowing that he has no choice but to sign if he wants to continue playing ball.

I expect Feight and Mims, if they stay, will have monster senior seasons and greatly improve their draft stock.

Jones didn't hear his name called tonight. Mackenzie Gore of Whiteville HS was taken 3rd overall by the Padres, one of three straight prep stars to be taken 1-2-3.

The draft resumes tomorrow with rounds 3-10 starting at 1 PM.

RE: 2017 MLB Draft (June 12-14)
Another NC high school player, Austin Beck, of North Davidson, was picked in the first round.

UNC-Chapel Hill had 3 players picked in the first round (the first 36 picks). Wake Forest had 2 players picked in the 2 first rounds, NC State had 1, and South Carolina 2.

The Knights' stadium in Charlotte hosts college baseball games during the week. Maybe Kinston's park could host UNCW vs Campbell. ECU draws too well to move a game.

W&Ms Nick Raquet is the first CAA guy off the board to the Nationals in the 3rd round.

Through 4 rounds, still no Greg Jones. I still think its unlikely, but starting to have some hope we may see him in a Seahawk jersey after all.

2017 MLB Draft (June 12-14)
We're in the 9th round, 275 picks in and still no takers on Greg Jones.

He's listed as the 10th best available on MLB.com's list, for what little that's worth. Lots of stuff happens behind the scenes.

Maybe he's dropping because teams think he'll opt to go to school? One can hope.

I read some that some scouts had him with an attitude,somewhat lazy and old for a high school player -19 and 3 months . Not exactly a top notch report.

I read that on his mlb.com profile as well. Might be other things going on that have helped cause his drop, but those elements almost have to be involved too.

Sounds like he needs some Mark Scalf and Randy Hood in his life.

"Old for a high school player" would matter because scouts may fear that his high school numbers are inflated I suppose? That seems like a bit of a stretch...he's 19 not 22. Either way, seems as if we have a chance to get him on campus. Good news for us.

Numbers and maybe the attitude say something about him being a old high school player. Lots of parents holding the kid back these days to give them a competitive edge over the younger players-scouts are aware of it and don't like it at all. College coaches might actually like it-it is a BS way of cheating within the rules.

CofCs Bailey Ober picked by the Twins in the 12th Round.

UNCWs Josh Roberson picked by the Marlins in the 12th as well.

Holding them back when? Kindergarten or later in school? As the parent of a young boy, there are valid reasons to delay starting school beyond an athletic advantage.

What's the slot value for Roberson? Slot value for the 315th pick by Chicago was $131k; Roberson was picked 44 spots later. That's not life changing money.

Hard to say, but I can't imagine he comes back. This is the last year where he has negotiating power. As a senior, you have to take what you get. No matter what he's offered now, it's almost a lock to be more than he gets next year, even if he's taken a few rounds higher.
