Track and Field NCAAs
Ty Lawson finished 9th in the Decathlon just missing All American status. He is a freshman so hopefully there is more to come.

Danny Thomas won the women's shot put. That should be worth a few Directors Cup points. She participates in the Discus Throw Saturday.

RE: Track and Field NCAAs
Jagers got a 2nd in the discus (somebody beat him on the very last throw) and Stevens finished 7th in the triple jump. The men finished in a six way tie for 26th worth 45.5 Director Cup points. The women compete tomorrow and they should do a little better.

With three sports not in the standings yet (men's track, women's track and baseball) we are in 67th place (10th best of the non power 5 schools)with 293.75 points. We should add about 90-100 points next Wednesday when all but baseball will be included. We have a chance to move up to between 50-55th place in the country by years end. Not too bad for a MAC school!!!

Thomas finished 4th in the women's discus giving Kent 13th place in the NCAA's (4 way tie). That should be worth another 60.75 Director Cup points giving us a total of 400 points. The next official standing update will be June 14 and will include all but baseball. The final standings will be June 30.

We will lead the MAC schools in the standings and should be in the fifties nationally. Ironically neither track team had a particularly great season yet they contributed 151 of the 400 points. Also I was surprised to see our field hockey team received no points. The first round of the field hockey NCAA tournament was considered a play in round and no points were awarded to the losers.

A good ending to our overall 2016-2017 athletic program.

RE: Track and Field NCAAs
Burden you bring up an interesting side note. Our track and field programs (cross country included) didn't have particularly good seasons, but thanks to a handful of individuals ended the year strong. It brings up a question in reference to the Wagon Wheel Challenge.

Currently, track and field/cross country is worth six points in the challenge and you only need seven to win it. It's surprising to me that we would ever agree to those scoring parameters in the first place, and even more so after baseball was eliminated from the competition.

The Wagon Wheel Challenge is supposed to measure the superior athletic program between the two rivals but it currently only shows which track and field program is better.

The Jacoby and Reese Cup competition also changed to favor track. Now both indoor and outdoor are scored as separate sports. In the past you only counted your best finish (either indoor or outdoor but not both). There's no doubt if these two cups and the Wagon Wheel were your main goals a very good track team would be a priority.
