"East Carolina" or "ECU"?
I've seen this brought up in prior threads, but wanted to get opinions.

I just got a survey, which I assume was sent to all alumni, asking about branding. The university is considering changing from "Tomorrow Starts Here" to something else ("This is where bulls run!" is my top recommendation, and it looks like they are also looking into the "East Carolina" vs. "ECU" topic.

One of the questions on the survey is...

"How would you rate your feelings about the following? The university being referred to as ECU (similar to schools like LSU, TCU, NYU, VCU, etc.)?"

So what say you Pirate Nation, fellow AAC fans, and visiting trolls?

RE: "East Carolina" or "ECU"?
Personally I think it would limit the directional school argument if we just went with ECU. I'm proud of it being East Carolina University, but as far as sports marketing I think ECU would better. ECU looks much better on ESPN than E. Car. or E. Carolina.

I think UCF has accomplish the same thing with getting away from Central Florida.

I already refer to ECU solely as ECU and occasionally as EZU.

The only directional school that isn't interested in condensed lettering it seems is South Florida, who I assume like to make America think they are located in south florida.

Never been a fan of directional indicators in a college name save for the heavily established brands like North Carolina or Southern Cal etc. Greenville University won't work. How about Carolina Coast University CCU? How far are you from the Atlantic? Otherwise you should probably use both ECU and East Carolina depending on the place where the logo will reside. ECU on most apparel and East Carolina on forms, letters, buildings, etc.

I wish we could drop the State in our name like Memphis did and be called University of Wichita, or just Wichita, like we were back in the 1920's. It seems the state of Kansas won't allow it.

Well, looks like you and I can agree on some things. And I think ECU is already fairly well established, so I would keep it that way.

RE: "East Carolina" or "ECU"?
Personally, I like the longer version - East Carolina. Maybe it matters to those who matter but I don't care about the directional names of schools. It's superficial to me. I care most about geography, rivalries, and competitiveness. I would definitely consider academics, market, and attendance as higher priorities. If I had it my way, there would be more geographically-condensed conferences (like bringing back the old Southwest and Big 8 conferences, and reducing the PAC, B1G, and SEC back to the "original" 10 members each.)

I prefer East Carolina. ECU is to similar to TCU, VCU, GCU, etc if you google just ECU not the best branding. Also ECU is also used by Ecuador. A lot of overlap in branding.

We unique where there is no state of Carolina. There is a north and south but no true carolina. It's not like we are East North Carolina Univeristy OR for example being in Tennessee and being called East Tennessee. We should just become Carolina Univeristy of the East similar to Swanee University of the South. We would be the University of the East, but for Athletics known as Carolina Pirates.

Hard to stop a school called Carolina with a large enrollment and great football support out of the SEC if they decide to expand. However if we brand ourselves as ECU we will never be anything more then a G5, we will just be another directional school hiding behind an acronym, like MTSU, UAB, WKU, UNT, UTSA, UTEP, FIU, FAU, USA, USM, etc.

Acronym schools are not the norm in P5 way more in the G5 then P5. Let's see how many P5 schools use an acronym for main branding.
1) USC
2) UCLA
3) TCU
4) LSU

A total of four where two are in a huge state and happen to be located in Los Angeles and have been power players since the beginning. The third is a recent move up to P5 that is a smaller private school happened to be located in another huge state of Texas and located in Dallas-Ft Worth Market. Also happens to be purple and _CU (seems like they beat us to it). The fourth happens to be Louisiana State University and they just prefer to go by an acronym. They also happen to be a life long member of the best football conference.

The point being if you are going to rebrand the best is to rename instead of using an acronym as an a directional school acronym doesn't make it to the P5.

You're on to something there buddy. UC - University of Carolina would be ideal. Carolina Pirates. Very nice. But if your state is anything like ours, UNC has the board of regents/legislators all locked up in their back pocket. I mean hell, the NCAA can't even get to them and they committed some of the finest examples of cheating higher learning will ever see. You enter a formal submission to become the University of Carolina and UNC removes your charter and throws you into the ocean. It's not worth dying for is it?

How about Eastern Carolina University instead of just East Carolina University.

You could always *kneel before Zod* and become THE University of North Carolina at Greenville. 04-bow The ChicKUns tried a hostile takeover of Wichita State around 40 years ago. They wanted the Board of Regents to turn us into the University of K|Uck at Wichita... that got booted out really f'n quickly. Soon after, we beat them in football, basketball (Sweet 16), and baseball in the same year. Things have been peachy ever since. There's no benefit in trying to get along with your neighbors when they're predatory animals (chickens).

RE: "East Carolina" or "ECU"?
I voted for East Carolina. I get the argument for branding, like SMU and UCF, but to me East Carolina just sounds better. What I think would help in our marketing/brand is A) insist on ECU as the official abbreviation (I don't recall seeing S. Cal or N. Caro on ESPN) and B) pick a damn logo, make it as iconic as possible, and don't change the thing every two years. Houston, Cincy, and SMU have had the (mostly) same logos for 50 years, and they're recognisable to the 'average' football fan.

RE: "East Carolina" or "ECU"?
While not their primary names, many P5's can be easily identified by their acronyms, especially locally: UNC (North Carolina), UVA (Virginia), UT (Texas), OU (Oklahoma), UW (esp. Udub - Washington), U of O (Oregon), U of U (Utah), BC (Boston College), Cal (California-Berkeley). I'm sure there are others.

If there was any way for ECU to officially change its name to just "Carolina" - that would be huge.
