That's a shock.

Hadn't heard a peep about it. Came out of no where.

Can't imagine they'll hand the keys to someone who only has a few years of coaching experience.

Smoke for Oklahoma to the SEC? Stoops has been pretty vocal of his disdain of the SEC.....

RE: Stoops Retiring!
really interesting timing.

Means Iowa's Kirk Ferentz is the only remaining college coach to have coached in the 90's and remained continuous at the school since. Him and Gary Patterson are the only 2 guys who have been with their programs continuously since before the 2005 season.

Only 12 guys have been at their programs for at least 10 years....
1 Ferentz-Iowa 1999
2 Patterson-TCU 2000
3 Gundy- Okla St 2005
3 Solich- Ohio U 2005
3 Whittingham- Utah 2005
6 Fitzgerald- Northwestern 2006
6 Stockstill- Mid Tennessee 2006
8 Niumatalalo- Navy 2007
8 Dantonio- Michigan St 2007
8 Baliff- Rice 2007
8 Calhoun- Air Force 2007
8 Saban- Alabama 2007

Only 7 others have been at the programs since before the 2010 season(so only 19 total). Guys there include Dabo Sweeney, David Cutcliffe, Paul Johnson(all 3 started in 2008), and Wilder(ODU), Mullen, Snyder, and Jones(South Alabama). Only 7 in 2010 and 2011 combined- and 12 in 2012. So entering this fall, there are only 38 of the 128 coaches in FBS that have been with their programs longer than 5 years. Not even 30%.

He came under heavy fire in recent years with the Mixon ordeal. Not too surprising if he is being forced out after with the Penn State and Baylor issues in recent years, you can't sweep news like Mixon under the rug anymore.

Thought this was a prank thread before I clicked it. Wow.

Can't believe Ferentz & Patterson are the only 2 coaches still with their school pre-05 (loved the early-mid BCS era).

I think the thing that is amazing is now Saban is in top 10 in longevity and even Dabo Sweeney is in the top 15. Heck, Bobby Bowden's replacement, Jimbo Fisher, is now tied for 20th.

Bruce Feldman @BruceFeldmanCFB

Bob Stoops is 56 & has won 10 Big12 titles. I'm told his reasoning for stepping down now is because he's ready & he wants to "go live life."

Why the sudden move from Stoops? Sources told FOX Sports’ Bruce Feldman that Stoops has just had enough

BS, the Mixon video was 2014, and he has not had an incident since, and there is no pending complaint. He is out of the program and in the NFL.

To be honest I think we have been way too hard on him because there is a video of the incident. It was clearly over the line, but he was baited into it. It was not a sexual assault, just a simple battery. I am not even sure his intent was to cause serious harm, simply he was far more powerful than her and the single blow did more damage than he expected. But I mean really taunting somebody with racial epitaphs? My feeling is he has one strike. If he doesn't do anything else then forget it, he learned. But if he does something else, OK we have a pattern.

*** [SOAP BOX] ***
Our society is far too unforgiving. We seem to think a single bad thing by somebody under 21 should DQ them for the rest of their life. But seriously how many of us committed petty crimes and did very nasty things before we matured an thought better of it, cleaned up our acts? Politically I am pretty conservative, except on the issue of criminal punishment. We screw over far too many people, and have more people in jail than even most dictatorships. That is messed up, and it is because we have lost the concept of redemption and rehabilitation. Even when out we black list people.

A nice sugar coated answer. You don't quit like this in June. If what he were selling were true, he'd announced he was retiring at the end of the year to give his recruits, administration and players a chance to adjust.

EDIT: this was my 16,000th post!

Yes, particularly when you have a Heisman contender at QB.
