RE: 2017 Athlon Sports SBC Preview
They have Troy with the best RB's and WR's. They didn't list unit rankings for QB's, but they did pick Brandon Silvers as 1st Team All-SBC, and one guy picked him as OPOY. Before spring camp, we were bringing back 100% of our offensive yards produced at WR, TE, RB, and QB so it's not surprising. We had a walkon receiver (113 yards) who transferred to FAMU recently. Half of his yards were versus Savannah State.

This will be a breakout year for a Troy offense that returns 99.809% percent of offensive yards produced. We'll probably see a lot more hurry up this year since no one is really learning a new system. Can't wait for Boise State.

Call me a homer if you want to, but not having GS's running backs in the top 5 is a joke.

It probably is the homer in you. GS returning running backs were #12 and #17. Lots of returning guys from other schools ahead of you in rushing statistics (yards and TD's). Why would they consider GS on potential alone? Most of us feel with the new coordinator, GS will get back to their usual selves. But it's not set in stone, Tyson Summers could still screw it up. Most national publications don't know enough about our teams to bank on potential, and they probably shouldn't anyway.

You can throw the stats from last year in the garbage.

Matt Breida was first all-time in FBS career yards per carry after two seasons of carries before our OCs and OL coach blew that the hell up.

Predicted order of finish is one thing but ranking individual units is another. I would expect people to actually watch games in order to rank units.

If there's 16 backs in the conference better than Wesley Fields I'm the Queen of England.

That's not how this works.

Would you like some tea? Honestly I'd probably put you guys 4th behind Troy, APP, and NMSU. I'm sure Fields is great, but the Top 3 have some absolute monsters at running back.

Wait, some guy has Akron at Troy as the most intriguing SBC game next year? What??

It will be proven to be no doubt. Ramsby gets the hard yards up the middle and Fields breaks ankles on the edge. Not worried about those two at all. Not top five is a joke, enough tape on both and we have recruited very well at those spots.

There's not enough evidence to call it a "joke" that they didn't include GS in their Top 5. They're simply going on what they know which usually amounts to last year's results and statistics. They don't really care about potential because, unless they're a GS superfan or a SBC insider, they're not going to put you in there based on a hunch about hidden potential, or what could happen with a coaching change.

I think what you posted about having them 4th is reasonable. I would disagree with that but I think it's reasonable. "Potential" here is really not the right word, though. We're not talking about redshirt freshmen here or guys that have only played garbage time. Both have had significant meaningful snaps for at least 2 seasons now.

Another Note: It's interesting to base rankings on performance last year but have our OL in the top 5. I mean, we have (I think) a top-5 unit but if you were to watch those guys last year I'm sure anyone would be very underwhelmed. It was most likely the worst run blocking a Georgia Southern football team has ever done, and that's not an exaggeration.

Those are fair points. On being better than 4th, it's hard to move past teams who have Jalin Moore, Jordan Chunn, and Larry Rose III headlining their units.
