RE: Offseason baseball thread
I have it on good authority that Nelms will be a mid week starter with an outside chance of starting on the weekend. However wed seems like the spot he gets.

Believe you are right. Heard he would be a midweek or possibly a Sunday starter.

He didn’t have a great summer, but word is he showed some potential in the fall.

Didn't we sign some pitchers that are supposed to contribute?

Ryan Och, Jacob Weirich, Adam Jackson, Mason Strickland, Trevin Eubanks, and Jarod Wright are your pitching newcomers. Drew Boyd too but he's sitting out this year with an injury.

IMO, Strickland will log the most innings out of these guys. Doesn't throw particularly hard but mixes his pitches up well and throws strikes.

Wright is a NWCC guy and appears to be similar to Colt Smith based on his JUCO stats. Didn't hear much about him in the fall.

Och is a freshman out of Minnesota that we signed very late. Lefty. Throws 88-90 already which is pretty good as a freshman lefty. Good movement on his pitches, but struggled a little with control in HS. Berry thinks he has very high upside.

Weirich is another freshman lefty. Out of Jefferson City, MO. Doesn't throw hard (84-86) but he could increase his velocity as he progresses here. Still very young. Keeps hitters off-balance with lots of breaking stuff.

Trevin Eubanks is a JUCO righty out of the Florida panhandle. Throws low 90s and has fairly decent stuff. Not great stats in JUCO ball (8.47 ERA/2.35 WHIP at SJRSCC last season) but appears to be one of the guys on the staff that has a high upside.

RE: Offseason baseball thread
Schedule is finally out. Just waiting to see which teams (3 of SFA, Bradley, South Dakota State, and UT-Arlington) we will face in Nacogdoches from Feb 23-25.

http://www.southernmiss.com/sports/m-bas...sched.html

I give this schedule a solid B. It's not elite (like what a Tulane or even ULL/USA play), but it's not a piece of garbage like some schedules we've had under Berry. The thing I would change is that I'd sub the Pensacola tourney for a road series against a program like ULL, Missouri State, or DBU with them returning the trip in 2019.

Mississippi State will be our first series since CSF in 2008 and 2009 against a top 10-15 program. Very good series for us and another opportunity for us a program. The Stephen F. Austin tournament was a last-second deal and was pretty much our only option when Stony Brook bailed. It’s not a great field by any means but it’s better than playing Stony Brook in Hattiesburg just from the standpoint that we get more RPI points for winning road/neutral games. Pensacola field is OK, I guess. Hopefully Ohio State or Nicholls has a good year to help us out. Remember that when we committed to this event, Virginia Tech was in the field (not Eastern Michigan). Tough for me to fault Caillet and Berry for that. I like the Georgia Southern series. That's a top 100 program and is probably the best Sun Belt program outside of the trio of Coastal/ULL/South trio. All three of their probable rotation guys for 2018 pitched on the Cape last summer. That’s really impressive. They could very well contend for an at-large spot in the spring.

Midweek rotation is the same, except we play Southern instead of MSU. Also have a 2 game midweeker vs ULL. That is the only negative about playing State on the weekend instead of on Tuesday or Wednesday. You have to fill that spot with a low RPI team.

Rice has probably been in that top 10-15 range during that time frame.

Really would like to see us play some more early series against marquee opponents. There are aplenty in this region to choose from. Not a bad schedule though.

I was talking OOC games. Should have clarified. Yes, Rice was definitely in that category for awhile.

Agree about playing marquee series. The State series is nice but that sorta fell in our laps with their stadium renovation. 0% chance they would be here if it wasn’t for that.

We should be playing at least 1 top 25 team a year on the weekend OOC. Our fans love to blame our budget for our scheduling problems, but that doesn’t hold any weight when schools like ULL can get a H/H with Texas. Get some of our old CUSA buddies back on the schedule. ECU, UCF, Houston, etc. Play Illinois-Chicago or Kent State instead of Northeastern and Eastern Illinois. Get a early season tournament going in either Hattiesburg or Biloxi. Etc etc.

These are just some ideas to improve our OOC. The 2018 schedule isn’t terrible compared to some of the others, but typically Berry and Caillet schedule so weak that we need to be nearly perfect to host a regional. If we want to be a nationally respected program, we need to schedule like it.

RE: Offseason baseball thread
The NCAA recently released their 2018 record book with official attendance figures from the 2017 season. We finished #16 in the country with 3,369 a game. Only non-P5 school that did better than we did was ULL.
