No doubt. Would love for both him and McCarty to stay, but can't blame them for chasing their dream.

Sandlin threw 5 innings of scoreless ball last night on the Cape in a 0-0 tie. 6 Ks, 1 walk, 1 hit allowed on 69 pitches.

Could/would Sandlin turn into a starter for us? La Tech's ace (Nate Harris) who ended up being the CUSA Pitcher of the Year started off as their closer. Harris and Sandlin went head to head in relief in our Sunday match up this year in Ruston and both did a heck of a job that game from what I remember.

I could see Braley staying. I still think he would sign but him staying is more likely than McCarty. This was the first time he's pitched regularly in three years. It is certainly possible for him to get some more work in on the mound to improve his stock for next year.

I don't know enough about salary differences between rounds to know what the difference would be between being a third round pick and a sixth round pick, though. Not sure if enough of a difference to chance it.

I think it is pretty clear that McCarty has hit his ceiling under Federico. It makes sense for him to move on.

This is what I have been able to tell are the numbers for draft slots this year (first and last pick in the round):

Rd 3
Pick 76 - $755,400
Pick 105 - $511,900

Rd 6
Pick 166 - $283,300
Pick 195 - $222,600

Braley was pick 179 I believe and his falls at $253,800

This is all pre-tax I assume

Doesn't matter. They'll both get peanuts next year after their senior year if they come back. They'll have zero leverage. Seniors that don't go in the first 3 rounds usually get 10k as a signing bonus. And I don't have the info on how many seniors go in the top 2 rounds each year. But based on memory I'd say it's less than 5 on average. A lot of years there won't be any seniors picked in the 1st round at all.

Only reason to stay is if you feel you have something left to prove or that you want to play in Omaha. It's not like either of them are making a beeline to the majors. They'll hang in the minors a few years and maybe get a shot if they improve. They'll do the same thing whether they stay or not. Can't fault them for taking the money, but I hope they stay. There's a lot of people who left early in '08 who wish they'd have stayed.

I'm not sure that the first round being absent of a high number of seniors is as much as indication of it not being possible due to lack of leverage as much as it is that when a player with 1st round talent becomes draft eligible, they go and that is typically after their junior season. Thus, a high number of first and second round picks are juniors.

Brent Rooker is an example of a player who came back his senior year and dramatically improved his stock. 2016 he went in the 38th round, 2017 he goes 35th overall.

I'm not saying Braley or McCarty would make that kind of jump but if they went from 6th/7th round to the 3rd, they are looking at $300-500K difference in signing bonus.

MLB Draft had him listed as a Senior. My apologies.

We won a record 50 games this year, hosted a regional and couldn't even win our own regional against an in state rival that was absolutely depleted of pitching due to injuries. If we can't even get to a Super Regional with what we did this year, I don't see how we'd get to one next year even if they did stay. I'd be outta here.
