Marshall, Cronin among names mentioned for Ohio State job
https://sports.yahoo.com/news/ohio-state...27302.html

As such, don’t be surprised to hear big names get linked with the job. Wichita State’s Gregg Marshall and Xavier’s Chris Mack are probably the two biggest names out there now that Archie Miller is at Indiana and Shaka Smart has things trending in the right direction at Texas. Throw in Butler’s Chris Holtmann and Cincinnati’s Mick Cronin, and there likely won’t be a shortage of big names with an eye on that gig.

Marshall is very likely to walk away from a Top 5 team to go be 3rd fiddle at a lower-tier program. Makes sense, really, when you think about it.

Without any shred of evidence, Marshall is mentioned to go to pretty much every P5 opening the last 4 years.

Ohio State is probably a top 10 job in the country but OK.

Ohio State is a job that can steal coaches from most major 7 schools. They have the money to go crazy.

RE: Marshall, Cronin among names mentioned for Ohio State job
Realistic or not these 2 are going to continued to get mentioned as candidates by the media.

another....
https://www.si.com/college-basketball/20...candidates

Gregg Marshall, Wichita State

At the risk of being repetitive here, the timing is awful for Marshall. He returns a preseason top-10 team that’s poised to debut in the American Athletic Conference. There are few better pure coaches in the country. But Marshall is drastically different than Matta, as he relishes the spotlight and attention nearly as much as Matta shunned it. Hard to imagine someone like that thriving in the shadow of Big Football at Ohio State. His hiring would certainly make a splash.

Mick Cronin, Cincinnati

He’s won nearly 64% of his games at Cincinnati and reached the NCAA tournament in each of the past seven seasons. That resume, his low-key demeanor and vast experience in the Midwest make him an attractive candidate on paper. Few have proven more capable of coaching a consistent winner. What Cronin’s Bearcats lack in aesthetics, they make up for in production and victories.

Top 10? Really? That seems woefully out of touch. They have a nice program. Perhaps there was some miscommunication here. By lower-tier, I meant that OSU is on a lower tier than WSU, not on a low tier relative to D1.

In no way, shape or form is the WSU job better than the Ohio State job.

Sort of. They have a lot of money. But they aren't going to pay a basketball coach more than their football coach. So, 'crazy' becomes a somewhat limited amount.

Which is exactly why Marshall will be the new OSU coach, amirite?

They are a heck of a lot closer than people want to admit. The B10 vs AAC is really the only thing OSU has going for it. $$$ is equal, Fan support edge WSU, Spotlight on campus edge WSU, Job Security edge WSU.

People value different things, so that ranking will change based on the person.

I can't stand Ohio State (mostly their fans), but historically speaking they are a top 10 program, acknowledged by most publications every year when these type of lists come out (SI, Sporting News, etc.). They have a national title, four runner ups, 11 Final Fours and 15 Sweet Sixteens-- not to mention 22 Big Ten Championships and a plethora NCAAT appearances. Their not a Kentucky or a Kansas, but they are in the tier right beneath them.

I don't think/know that Marshall is headed to OSU, but let me forewarn you-- with the exception of maybe Alabama or Texas, there is no other school with the resources and money that Ohio State has. You guys have the Koch Bros... well.. they several billionaires that back them, including Les Wexner who is richer than the Kochs. If they want the guy, they can pay whatever you can and then some.

Alabama and Texas. Two teams known to have swung and missed on Marshall in the last 2 years.

Not that it matters at that level of money, but one half of the brothers are worth about ~10x what Wexner is ... (50 billion to 6)

Ohio St a lower tier program, really?? Just like the University of Texas, football will always be top dog at OSU but it is still a boardline top 10 basketball HC job in the country. Definitely top 15. Again, just like UT, they have more money, better facilities than just about any school, and they probably have the largest fan base in the country.

Large 'fan bases' that don't attend or generally give a crap about basketball.

Eh .. they still average 12-14k over the last few years ... not always at capacity, but decent. Would be hard to compare vs WSU since WSU is at 100% capacity though has consistently sold out it's 15k arena downtown. I'll give the slight edge to WSU, but really it could be called a push on fan base between the two.

Wichita State is a great program and Marshall has done a wonderful job there. But in no world is it a better program than Ohio State. Even over the last 10 years, Ohio State has been better than Wichita State.....

Last 10 years
==========
Ohio State----2 Final Fours, 3 Elite 8s, 5 Sweet Sixteens.

Wichita State---1 Final Four, 1 Elite 8, 2 Sweet 16s

Now, that doesn't mean Marshall will leave for Ohio State. He has a great team next season....maybe his best at WSU....while OSU will take a year or two to rebuild due to Matta's health issues affecting recruiting.

Is this where I can toss in the fact that WSU's final four was sealed with a win over Ohio State?

Yes, I'm not saying Marshall should or will leave for OSU. Just pointing out that it is beyond silly to suggest OSU is a lower tier basketball program. I've heard some crazy claims on message boards but that is up there with the craziest.
