It's not like we're going to capitalize on this when it comes to recruiting. Mick isn't going to start outrecruiting OSU, despite us being the historically better program. Best case scenario is that OSU hires Mack and Xavier finally hires a dud, and we become the uncontested #2 profile program in Ohio, with a shot at #1 depending on the Mack/OSU fit. Worst case scenario is that OSU makes a home run hire of someone else, and we then drop to a distant #3 in coaching ability AND recruiting within the state. IMO, we are currently #3 in recruiting behind Xavier and OSU, but #2 in coaching behind Xavier. I realize that OSU's 2017 class is ranked lower than ours on 247, but they also brought in half as many players... Their average rating was almost 91 compared to our 87.

I'm not going to consider the notion of OSU hiring Cronin, because... well... he doesn't "seem like their type."

All just my opinion.

We rarely (if ever) recruit head-to-head against OSU in basketball. Other than Cincy kids, we usually recruit out-of-state because the rest of Ohio doesn't produce a lot of basketball talent.

Within the State of Cincinnati we don't get all the recruits, but we rarely lose them to OSU. The only Cincy-area recruit that Ohio State signed in the past 15 years was Jordan Sibert.

Man, page 7 and i can't believe this has not come up. Mick decides to leave, would you entertain hiring Thad Matta if you were Uc? Guy is young and wants to coach, proven track record, yadada............Talk amongst yourselves.

LOL...CBS has an article up with the best replacements and Mick is on the list per usual.

Cincinnati's Mick Cronin. One of college basketball's most underrated coaches, and an in-state option. Cronin, 45, has guided Cincinnati to seven consecutive NCAA Tournaments. His teams are always very good on defense. Cronin nearly left Cincinnati to coach UNLV in 2016. He has a top-25 team coming back next year, but Ohio State is unquestionably a jump up from what he has now. Smith specifically cited Matta's lack of success in recruiting as the reason for making this change, so the next coach would have to be a proven recruiter. Cronin has won while, for the most part, bringing in top 75-175 guys.

I agree that Mick is one of the most underrated coaches in the country. Most don't appreciate how bad they let the facilities get compared to basically everybody they compete with. The timing would be really odd though with his best team coming back and an arena he's fought for for 12 years on the horizon.

He's certainly not flashy but with OSU resources I'd bet Cronin would be a huge success.

His back is so f'ed up he has to run practice from a rolling desk chair, so no I wouldn't want Matta.

At most places I think you have to actually be a college graduate to get the job.

Is that supposed to be a shot at Lebron for not going to college? Attending college would have been an awful decision by Lebron.

Word up here was that OSU med center jacked up his back worse and part of the reason they let him stay on was so he wouldn't sue. Just a rumor but something to add to the pile.

Great piece of research; thanks for sharing. I probably don't even want to know how Chris Mack stacks up against both coaches on this measure.

Chris Mack's only Ohio recruits were both from Cincinnati.

Semaj Christon 4 star (2014 2nd round pick)
Griffin McKenzie 3 star

I decided to check Mack's overall recruiting record:

Year Rank Avg. Rating
2010 19 .8925
2011 21 .9551
2012 26 .9501
2013 61 .9051
2014 17 .9343
2015 110 .9079
2016 28 .9377
2017 11 .9268

Overall .9262
A10 .9257
Big East .9267

Just to compare to Mick (omitting first year for his benefit):

Year Rank Avg. Rating
2007 12 .8892
2008 28 .9003
2009 27 .8962
2010 88 .8727
2011 27 .8771
2012 104 .7389
2013 25 .8884
2014 36 .8519
2015 58 .8904
2016 62 .9230
2017 62 .8701

Overall .8726
Big East .8661
AAC .8839

Mick's recruiting has actually improved somewhat since joining the AAC, whereas conference affiliation had a negligible effect on Mack's recruiting. I thought some people might find this interesting. It goes without saying that Chris Mack is the far superior recruiter.

Better take a closer look at the records gents. Taylor had many poor seasons and was a lousy recruiter...I won't play the race card here.........yet.

UC has rarely recruited the rest of Ohio for basketball - it may as well be a different state, and it's not exactly a hotbed for basketball talent anyways.

Good point. Matta has the most wins and the highest winning percentage of any OSU coach:

Wins
Matta - 299
Taylor - 297
Olsen - 275
Miller - 174

Winning % (only if they coached more than 30 games)
Matta - .761 (299-94)
Tayler - .653 (297-158)
Dye - .609 (53-34)
O'Brien - .600 (132-88)

Not sure if there is anything to see here--- yet. It's my understanding that he had already bought a different home in the area a month or so ago and this one was getting sold anyway.

What??? Listed above is four 5-star and ten 4-star players from Ohio on OSU's roster. So you're telling me Mick doesn't care about those players?? He'd rather go after some three star talent from New York or Texas? That's ludicrous. That's a ton of Ohio talent that Mick would love to have. Mick goes after guys he feels he can get and that's the reason he wasn't actively recruiting many of these players.
