Not so unusual for someone to think that an FCS school like W&M is just as good as an FBS school like Penn State. Furthermore, PSU has serious moral / ethical issues. Lastly, I'm sure everybody remembers Laycock / Boston College.

A BCS school provides so much more opportunity (and usually pay) than an FCS school. Everyone remembers Laycock and BC but that is because of how unusual that type of decision is.

If you have to lose someone to a BCS school, it sucks but so be it. Good for that person. If you lose to a supposed peer, that is worse unless of course they get a big promotion out of it that would not have been available to the person otherwise (example - an Assistant Football coach leaving for a head coaching position at another FCS school in the 90s since Laycock was going to be around for a while).

Spencer sounds like a great guy. I hope we bring in a worthy replacement.

Thanks for the nod, but it was the perfect example of what happens when you bring folks with a common goal (support W&M basketball) together to brainstorm. I believe it went from a beginning idea of NJ Alum's and worked through several modifications before the final product (Gold Rush) was pitched to the administration. And no doubt, if not for Spencer--the event never would have happened. He worked on making it better every year, right up to his departure. We were on a conference call with him regarding Gold Rush '18 days before he took the Penn State job, not knowing that he was leaving.

This program is going to miss that man.
