after living in East Toledo for only a year, I used to refer to East Toledo as the western suburb of Oregon. That area has gone downhill quickly. Always kind of a rough area, but not dangerous. Not sure it can be characterized that way now.
Well we just went from "fun" to social commentary so...
"downhill?" Was it ever "up?" Eastside is the only side of town I can think of doesn't have a neighborhood of Victorians or generally large houses for that matter. It's generally been the open door for immigrants and migrants because of its lower blue collar economy. "Up" is a modest ranch style house.
As a long time Eastsider, While not all of course, I've seen those that left to go out to Oregon (and other places) and they generally were not the ones capable of adjusting to "diversity," if you get my drift. They're the bitter that quit and snipe at the city from afar, were never part of solution and complain their renters do not keep up "their" properties and memories. And now that "diversity" is creeping into the new digs, they're heading for new hills. They (and some of the further like strip mall burbs) are the ones with the income that bring in and distribute or come in and buy the drugs and prostitutes. They're the ones that live there but carpetbag and work here. Come in, get the money and take it with no service or regard to the neighborhoods in which they rake in their civil-service cash.
There are some out there that are truly loyal but generally, I've no love for that place myself. Lots of potential, but anyone and everyone can tell you all the destructive egos and beatchin holding back that place, particularly the school system, including sports. And to ME, it's all consistent with the personalities I saw leaving the Eastside for that place. I'll take the diversity and light heartedness and the poverty of the Eastside over the strip mall anytime.
As far as I'm concerned, this young lady "escaped." Good on her.
