MyBB Lunardi goes with NMSU
Five months before a single game is played, ESPN's Joe Lunardi goes with Aggies to represent the WAC in his latest 2018 Tournament Bracketology. He currently projects NMSU as a 13-seed in the West, taking on 4th seeded St. Mary's.

This is the same seeding and matchup Lunardi had back in April, when he moved St. Mary's into the 4-seed & dropped UCLA to the 5. The only other change Lunardi made from April to now, with regard to NMSU/St. Mary's, is moving them from the East to West region.

I think this is a testament to how much CSUB lost in Basile, Airington, Smith, and Pride. And, how important Russell was to GCU. NMSU lost a lot this off-season but they still have arguably the best big man WAC... and, probably the best guard tandem in the WAC. There is still a lot of time between now and the start of next season. With four available scholarships, Jans has the potential to improve NMSU's roster greatly.

I think it just shows that no one truly knows the WAC.

Ive also seen him in past years change the projected WAC auto bid to whoever was 1st in the conference standings that week. Doubt he spends too much time on the WAC

The WAC is unpredictable. One or two players on a team can make a big difference, whether it is new recruits, or someone stepping up their game like Chuha did last year.

We really don't know who those difference makers will be.

I think it is always 1st in conference for the WAC. Lunardi knows that a one bid league is going to be represented by the champ, so he just puts the first eligible team for each one of those conferences.

Or, in this case, the team that represented the WAC in the tournament last year. However he does it, I'm not saying he is wrong. Stuff like this is just interesting to look at while we fill the time between now & November.

Does anyone know if he provides an explanation of the reason for changes from one version to the next (i.e. flip-flopping St. Mary's & UCLA seedings in April, moving NMSU/St. Mary's from East to West region, etc.)?

Actually, the WAC has been very predictable the last 8 years. NMSU has been in the WAC Tournament Championship game 7 out of 8 years; winning it 6 times. Picking NMSU as the WAC's NCAA Tournament representative again is usually a safe bet.

New Mexico State is the clear favorite with GCU, Utah Valley, and Bakersfield chasing them.

Should be a fun season.

GCU eligibility will add a new dynamic which should make Vegas interesting. Looking for to the season.

RE: Lunardi goes with NMSU
Lunardi puts whoever wins WAC tourney so wouldn't get to excited. Surprised he didn't put GCU since they have outgrown the Wac and ready to join the PAC 12
