MyBB Colangelo Hints at MM Conference Changes
There honestly isn't much HERE, but I'm more inclined to take notice when Jerry Colangelo talks about realignment and the potential for a new MM conference than random message board conspiracy theorists. No offense. Haha.

He is just talking out of his butt. There is going to be no interest of a new conference. The Big West or the WCC isn't going to add GCU.

No, message board posters like us talk out of our butts (for the most part). People with the resume, relationships, resources, and respect of a Jerry Colangelo actually know things most of us can only speculate about. In most cases, they are the ones making those things happen.

What actually happens, if anything, remains to be seen. Again, I'm just going to pay a little more attention when one of the most respected & connected men in the world of basketball speaks on conference creation/realignment.

OMG gleadley!! Right when I thought you were a normal guy then you post this!!

Grand Canyon fans delusional view of life on display once again. Here is GCU fans view of the order of the most important people in the universe:

Jerry Colangelo>Dan Majerle>Jesus Christ=The Holy Trinity

P.S. No one outside of your purple bubble gives a crap about Jerry Colangelo and his for profit online college.

RE: Colangelo Hints at MM Conference Changes
Team USA Basketball gives a crap about him.
It's why they brought him in as Managing Director.

The NBA & 76ers give a crap about him.
It's why he was brought in as a Special Advisor to the franchise.

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame cares about him.
It's why he was inducted and voted Chairman.

Arizona sports fans care about him.
He has brought or owned six professional teams to the state, including NBA, MLB, & NHL.

The City of Phoenix cares about him.
He initiated and has lled much of the downtown revitalization effort for the 5th largest city in America.

The Western Athletic Conference cares about him.
He introduced WAC leadership to that of the nation's top D2 athletic program, which led to adding a member who helped stabilize a dying conference.

None of this is exaggeration or hyperbole. These are not delusions. Colangelo is and has done all of these things. I'm sorry if that is hard for you to hear or accept, but it's true.

I didnt read it as GCU is driving the charge for a new conference. Only that there may be a new conference option beyond the horizon for GCU.

What a ridiculous article. The writer does not know the WAC and he has an inflated opinion of the Horizon. They just lost their best team. Below are the 2017 records of the schools from the cities that the article mentioned:

Detroit 8-23 RPI 289
Cleveland State 9-22 RPI 263
Milwaukee 11-24 RPI 260

CSUB 25-10 RPI 59
NMSU 28-6 RPI 55
UVU 17-17 RPI 180

A direct flight from Phoenix to Bakersfield is 90 minutes. To Salt Lake City 90 minutes and Las Cruces is a bus trip or a one hour flight to El Paso plus 45 minute bus trip to Las Cruces. So by travel or quality of competition, the Horizon is not a good move for GCU.

What Colangelo said was “I would foresee over the next four or five years a lot of schools making changes,” Colangelo explained. “Maybe a new conference developing.”

That is realistic. There will be changes over the next five years. There could be a conference merger. Some conferences will tighten their footprint. There could be some conference re-alignment based on geography. There is a much better chance of that rather than GCU flying to the eastern time zone to play bad basketball programs.

I agree. With ESPN losing money (and subscribers) hand over fist, the moves to grab schools in markets to chase a potential TV deal are likely over. I think we might finally see some common sense realignment moves from here on out.

RE: Colangelo Hints at MM Conference Changes
The way I read it, the Big West is completely blocked (no shock, can't see any UC Chancellor, nor their counterparts at Hawaii ever approving that - P12 stank on BYU x10), and the WCC is not open for at least a decade (I'm sure some ADs and coaches may like the idea, but the Presidents would like to see GCU be a little more blue blood in it's selectivity and rankings -- put another way, we'll look at you in 10-15 years to see if you are an institutional fit as well as you are a Athletic fit).

So GCU is casting it's search wider to try and find it's next home now that it is through transition. Chicago State has given GCU (and NMSU) experience in what navigating a Great Lakes conference would be like.

One thing Colangelo and Cesmat have right, we should look at schools in terms of flight time and not driving distance. And the travel partner concept is in need of better understanding (it applies only to Basketball and Women's Volleyball). We all need to look at flight schedules and not driving maps (that is for the equipment Van/Truck to worry about, and those guys can drive 12 hours straight --- yeah I know legally need a break). Players and coaches take an airplane ride.

If you play a school on Thursday night, many times teams are flown home that night to be in class the next morning, then fly again to the Saturday game site, even if the two are only 1 hour apart by bus. The Horizon and the WCC are the only leagues I know that recognize this and schedule many game pairs Friday-Saturday (or Friday Sunday). When you have a pair of weekend games like NKU and Wright State (Friday Night and Saturday Night or Sunday afternoon) then it makes sense to stay in the hotel. But if it's a Thursday in Detroit, you might as well fly home, taking advantage of the 2 hour time zone difference, be in bed by 1 AM and able to go to class Friday before another flight on Saturday morning to play Oakland. When you do that it could frankly be any opponent.

RE: Colangelo Hints at MM Conference Changes
The Horizon has nothing to offer:

1. Their NCAA Tournament financial units are the same as the WAC. They are a one-and-done conference just like the WAC. They cannot offer more revenue.

2. There is no getting around the travel. A flight to Cleveland is four hours on a non-stop. A flight to Bakersfield is 90 minutes on a non-stop. Detroit is almost four hours on a direct flight.

3. This year, the WAC was #17 in RPI and the Horizon #18. The Horizon just lost their best team in Valpo. They don't offer a better level of play for the long trips and the additional travel expenses.

4. GCU is a western school. They recruit in the west. 25% of their on-campus students come from California. Most of their on-campus students come from the southwest.

Colangelo talked about conference changes in the future. That would not surprise anyone. GCU in the Horizon is a dumb idea by the writer of the article and you are never going to get the Horizon schools to leave their buses for flights to Phoenix. He very well could be talking about changes to the WAC in the future.

I believe there is a NCAA rule that a new conference won't have an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament so GCU go ahead and create that conference. No one will follow.

My understanding too, is what Frank said (...did I really write that?? 03-wink ). There is a waiting period for bids from new conferences formed.

The AAC was a brand new conference and had zero wait time to get an autobid for from the NCAA.

Unless it has been changed, there is a clause that if a minimum number of the teams have played together in the same conference for a minimum number of years, then they can get an autobid. (I don't remember details of how many, and not interested enough to look it up.) AAC met that. However if it is a group with only one or two that have been together, then the waiting period kicks in. Both sides of the argument can be correct depending on which side of the line it falls on.

So, GCU would likely need some company .....from here.

Sharing. I found this page where the DI manual can be downloaded in PDF format, among others.
Going out (to watch The Godfather on the big screen...thanks TCM) so I'll browse it later....maybe. Anyway, nice to be able to get offline copy of the manual.

Yes, talking about most of the conference. Only CUSA is in a position to take advantage of this IIRC.
