1st NCAA appearance by Davidson....oh and they only have 3 scholarships in baseball. Not a fluke win either. They played UNC earlier and lost in extra innings.

Iowa up on UH in the 8th 4-3.

Sam tied with AZ 1-1 in the 4th.

Now 6-3 Iowa with 2 on and only 1 out in T8.

Mississippi State (2 seed) lost to South Alabama in USM regional. I like USM's chances of advancing at least to the Supers, and maybe further.

I knew a few people who went to Davidson. Unrelatedly, I wouldn't be surprised if the 80% number double-counted people who did multiple programs (e.g. semester in Spain and semester in Africa gets counted as 2 students doing programs abroad).

And only somewhat relatedly, a lot of smaller colleges have big junior-year-abroad cultures, to the point that it can be kind of lonely for the juniors who stick around.

The only comment from you that I've enjoyed whether your posts were as Pellet Owl or Eat More Vole. Maybe they'll hire Coach Hallmark to be their pitching coach the rest of the regional too just to cheer you up? He's got a few extra days where he's not doing anything.

A Rice-Davidson athletics connection: Don Knodel's assistant Bob Brickels left Rice in 1974 to become the head basketball coach at Davidson. He was fired after two years (12-40), but was credited with recruiting John Gerdy, who went on to hold the Davidson career scoring record for three decades ... until Steph Curry broke it.

Ironically, Brickels was watching an NBA playoff game between Steph's Golden State Warriors and the Houston Rockets when he was fatally stricken about midnight on April 21-2, 2016.
