"Mumford, a former guidance counselor and assistant principal in the Memphis City Schools system, paid the test takers hundreds of dollars for each test. Federal prosecutors said he made $120,000 in the scheme.
Coaches made up a significant number of defendants. They included Cedrick Wilson, a former University of Tennessee wide receiver who played for the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, and Jermaine Johnson, who coached Memphis’ Melrose High School to a state championship in 2010.
In all, 13 participants have been convicted of felonies, and 10 are serving prison terms. That’s in addition to the 40 former teachers who reached deals in which they were stripped of teaching licenses and ordered to pay restitution to school districts that employed them."
On a side note... Jermaine Johnson has been promoted to Associate Head Coach at UT Martin. https://hoopdirt.com/jermaine-johnson-pr...ee-martin/

Have followed the story, but it's just so depressing on so many levels.
Calkins has quoted the statistic in the past that only 2.6%, IIRC, of those raised below the poverty level in Shelby County escape poverty as adults. Grinding, generational poverty. And these administrators almost guarantee that result for these kids by not preparing them in any way to join a 21st century workforce.
Athletics should be the lever to motivate these kids in the classroom, not a reason to falsify their academic record.
It isn't solely in the hands of the administrators. For those of us who grew up differently we had support from our families, mostly parents. We had to come home from school and complete our homework before heading out to play, etc. So many of these kids are not being prepared at home to do anything but become another statistic. In way too many cases in this type of environment, school is nothing but a free daycare for parents.

What do you expect when the leaders in the community vilify anyone who has made it in the world unless they support a prescribed point of view.
These kids grow up thinking that sports is their only way out and if held accountable for their action to the point where it prevents them from pursuing that dream then that person is wrong and is hurting the kid.
You have national leaders who have reached some of the highest points in their chose field and they are criticized and seen as villains in the community.
Sad part is some of these kids are treated like demigods from birth due to their heritage and are never are asked to abide by the same rules as others.

All Shelby County transcripts to be audited
uh oh
Time to clean up the cesspool.
Would be nice...
But the truth is that it is not only a SCS problem.
These charter schools may not be changing grades but they do have kids with above 3.5 GPAs who cant score a 19 on the ACT.
That is a huge red flag right there and should be seen as something that should be investigated.

I said the same thing about Thad Young and Mitchell back when Thad was a recruit. It was not well received by the person whom this thread was addressed to.

Was Thad the one for whom some teachers made all other students stand up when he walked in the room? That's it in a nutshell.

I haven't kept up with the whole story. But I know how the TSSAA gets attendance numbers for classification. It comes from the actual enrollment numbers for certain days of the school year, as submitted by the administration. Coaches are not supposed to have anything to do with it.
