Memphis Hustle competition or not??
It is not likely that the Griz D League team the Memphis Hustle will be playing home games up against the Griz. Which means it is more likely that they will be playing game at the Lander Center directly up against the Tigers home games.

Will th4 D League team be competition for the Tigers for walk up crowds?

If basketball fans are choosing a G League team to go watch over the Tigers, we have much bigger issues to worry about.

RE: Memphis Hustle competition or not??
Of course they are competition - I think you guys are dreaming.

Let's say it's a December weeknight, and Tigers have a home game against a poor quality 'guarantee game' opponent. Last year we had juggernauts like UT Rio Grande Valley, Milwaukee, Savannah State, McNeese and Incarnate Word.

And at the Lander's Center, it's the Hustle - BTW, great name - with Baldwin and Selden at guards, Rade and Jarell at forward and DD at center. Or even 3 of those five. And maybe a former Tiger like DJ or Joe. And their opponents will probably have 1st rounders playing - 44% of current NBA players once played in the D-League.

Which game will have a higher quality of basketball? If you live in Whitehaven or Southaven or Olive Branch or SE Memphis, are you more likely to drive a few miles to an easily accessible Landers Center or all the way downtown? G-League game tickets, parking and concessions will probably be cheaper too.

And whose a better salesman for their product - Cyp and the Grizzlies FO, or Bowen and Tubby? I think we all know the answer.

Just more BB for Memphis area. I would attend a few if I lived there.
Love my Tigers, but way more expensive at Forum, for a lesser product.
Hope I am wrong, but just do not anticipate a good season with Tubby at the helm.

It is called money which the Grizzles have a lot more of to sale their product. You enjoy the G League but just remember that the NBA and the G League is what is killing college basketball nation wide.

Could put this in the Grizz forum, but I think it applies here too. Look at these local ratings for last night's Cavs-Dubs Game 1:

Sports TV Ratingsā€ @SportsTVRatings 6m6 minutes ago

local market #s via @Ben_ESPN:

Cleveland 33.4
San Fran/Oakland 30.9
Columbus 17.3
Memphis 16.3
Miami 15.8

Memphis the highest NBA TV rating in the country for a market outside the home markets.

Said for a long time, biggest threat to Tigers is the success of the Grizzlies. I think both can be successful, some don't, but either way Tigers better get their ducks in a row.

Agree to disagree 2tigers. And money has never been the problem for Tiger hoops. We have had plenty of it, and more than almost all teams on our schedule for the past 8 years.

I am a fan of good basketball. Still go to about 10 local high school games a year. College hoops has done this to itself. Quality of play is lacking, the one and dones, 700 - 800 transfers per year . . . College football drives the bus. It's a big problem, but college hoops needs to own it.

It will be a bit more popular than the RiverKings and the Redbirds.

Competition for the Tigers? Yes.

Will it have a major impact on Tiger's ticket sales? Probably not. Minor League sports are just a different market, and a different type of fan.

The alumni base for the Tigers in the city should be large enough to support the team on its own.

Why was this moved to the Grizz forum? It's about the Hustle's impact on Tiger ticket sales ...

Great post

It comes down to the quality of the product eventually and college basketball has been sorely lacking.

This is correct, hands down. Also the hype of the NCAA Tournament pretty much renders the regular season meaningless. Even the conference tournaments are yawning, borefests leading up to the Selection Show that last Sunday.
As for the Tigers, they stand or fall on their own record. Blaming the Grizz, or a minor league team in a different state, or Mary Poppins playing at The Orpheum for poor attendance is silly. Start winning over decent teams consistently, flirt with the top 20 on a regular basis, and the fans will be back quick. When the football Tigers were lame playing before sparse crowds under Larry Porter we didn't blame 'the Cowboys are on tv' or 'the Riverkings have a game'. Football righted the ship, and now it's a whole different experience. With the history of Tiger basketball, it'll bounce back quick with decency. U of Memphis athletics will rise or fall by what they as a group do.
