Tiger fans have rejected mediocrity
An article in the Associated Press many years ago illustrated the concept of rejecting mediocrity. Basketball coach Tubby Smith left Kentucky and moved to become the coach at Minnesota (and has since moved on from there). The article read… “In Tubby Smith’s 10 seasons at Kentucky, the Wildcats never missed the NCAA tournament. They also won a national title, five SEC championships and 76 percent of their games. That wasn’t good enough for the demanding Kentucky faithful.”

Maybe the point is that we have a pretty good coach.

Then I agree with you. For a minute I didn't know if this was gonna be another bash Tubby thread.

Soon the bash Tubby crowd will spring up again and those who do not want Tiger sports to do well will sing their usual song: he can't coach or he can't recruit. It is the same song over and over again.

I'm in the Tubby camp but I don't get why the thread title mentions tiger fans when the post talks about his Kentucky years. I think you just want to stir up something with the anti Tubby crowd.

He can't coach and he can't recruit. Truth hurts bro. He will be gone within 2 years.

Maybe they expected him to meet the same level the coach before him met. His NC came with players who had played in two NC game the previous three years. His seniors on that team played in three NC games winning two of them.
Did the article mention that after leaving UK he had NEVER finished above .500 in conference. Not a single one of his teams after UK would have made it to the NCAA with their same records if they did not play in P5 conferences. He actually finished better in conference this past year at Memphis than he has since leaving UK. T-5th none of his other teams were better than T-6th in conference.

I'm sure no one has mentioned it, but I am proud of your new found enthusiasm for all sports Memphis since you're reinstatement.
Congrats on turning the corner Tiger fan!

This is just not true. What do you get by spreading lies about your head coach? I remember those 3 years like it was yesterday. However, you were probably not born yet.
Three players were really important in UK's 98 team who did not play in all 3 years that you mentioned. 1. Scott Padget was suspended because of grades. 2. Jeff Sheppard, redshirted because 97 team was loaded with stars and no room for him. 3. Cameron mills who was a walk-on and was utilized equally by both Rick and Tubby. He was a 3- point specialist who helped Tubby in many gamed that year. By the way, Jeff and Cameron have said this many times that if it wasn't because of Tubby's coaching, that team would have never won that NC.
Go Google it, that team lost, Mercer (from Nashville), Anderson, Walker, McCarty, Delk, Pope, .... and so many other stars. There was no way that even Rick would have won NC that year. I was in LA that day when UK played Duke. I left at the half time to go to the airport. All the sudden, I am walking behind Tarkanian and hear him saying to his assistant that UK just beat Duke. That was an absolute miracle. Yes it was the players who played the game but they were coached by your head coach who is a pretty damn good coach and needs you all's support not lies and negativity.
Go Tigers

not to mention that of all the schools you mentioned racecar dude...they were all rebuilding projects.
No one can wave a magic wand over a team in a single year and cure all of its ills that Minnesota and Texas Tech had faced.

RE: Tiger fans have rejected mediocrity
Tubby had his team's ranked in the top 25 for 16 out of the last 18 years before taking on the projects of resurrecting Texas Tech & post-Pastner Memphis. Some people (like the one above) would like us to believe his coaching abilities haven't been witnessed in 20 years, but getting a program like Minnesota ranked in the top 10 probably surpasses anything we've seen around here in a while, and I'm pretty sure he did that his last year there.
We get that he doesn't have signing the most 4 & 5-stars as his lone strategy for winning like Pastner did, but people act like he just started doing it that way. He didn't.

Check Bartow's first year.
He pretty much walked into Finch and Robinson. Iba recruited them but never got to coach them due to the freshman ineligibility rule in place back then.

The only problem was that Kentucky was pretty much junk after Tubby left until they flashed the money card in front of Cal who took the Memphis Program and players to Lexington. Tubby won't be Cal, but he should be alright, if you like to watch players develop.

And didn't get over the top until he recruited Larry Kenon, a JC baller, who was the best player on the team.

Just responding to the 1 year magic wand comment.
Finch and Robinson were unproven sophomores. Finch was the key while Robinson was not considered a top recruit but blossomed under Bartow.
Went from 6-20 to 18-8 and were playing for the conference title the last week of the season while playing in the tough MVC.
Bartow was also very good with the PR. Very personable unlike the current coach.
1970-71 was the year I became a tigers fan at the tender age of 15.
