Our enemies see daylight between us and our allies.

RE: China Sees an Opening in Rift Between Trump and Germany
Anglela Merkle is right....sort of. The days of the US being rich enough, and desperate enough, to borrow trillions of dollars to pay for Europe's defense have ended. The US really has no choice when its borrowing 40 cents of every dollar it spends. Hard to defend that anymore.

The US actually hasn't walked away from Europe. It has asked Europe to uphold their end of the AGREEMENTS they signed. They dont want to pay their fair share in accordance to the agreement they signed and want to hold us to....therefor indicating maybe THEY arent very reliable partners. The fact is, other than Great Britain, who is dumping the EU---much of Europe has been absent in our fight against terrorism. Even in the Balkans, a war that was going on right in their own laps, they were largely useless---making the US handle most of the heavy lifting. The Europeans, other than providing a handful of window dressing troops so we can call our mlitary moves "mulit-national", are fairly unreliable. Hell, France wouldn't even let us fly over their airspace when we wanted to bomb Libya.

If asking them to shoulder their part of the load for their own defense (something they themselves agreed to do) is too much to ask---then how exactly are WE the unreliable allies? The Paris Climate Accords are more of the same BS. We will no doubt be asked to pay more, do more, and provide more, than anyone else.

We are reliable partners. Are they? Other than the Brits, I'm not so sure they are.

Germany is a poor excuse for an "ally". More like an ungrateful protege gone rogue.

Germany would look a lot like the Balkins if we didn't dump our treasury into rebuilding it after the world wars. Phuck that kunt Merkel.

RE: China Sees an Opening in Rift Between Trump and Germany
If China wants to protect Germany from Russia, let them. If China and Russia want to destroy each other in WWIII, we'll pop some corn and watch.

Bottom line: There are some very real limits on how far a China-Germany agreement can go, particularly if climate change is going to be a major element.

I do agree that it is problematic for us if China is going to advocate freer trade than we are. That will ultimately give them economic leverage that far outweighs any military leverage we have. I'm in total disagreement with Trump in that area. I do agree that we need to become more competitive in the global economy. But the way to get there is not protectionism but a combination of tax reform, regulatory reform, improved infrastructure, improved education, and a real safety net to replace the "welfare trap."

Maybe we should just do what the Germans do to the other Europeans. In other words, if you don't want to protect yourself or pay for us to protect you, fine, we'll start chipping away at their sovereignty. Maybe US congress should have final approval on their fiscal policy, monetary policy, and national budget.

Does anyone recall the Marshall Plan? Or has that become a historical oddity like "Remember the Maine."

RE: China Sees an Opening in Rift Between Trump and Germany
Honestly, we don't really need Europe anymore. We have two oceans to protect us and the largest blue water Navy in the world. Frsnkly, we'd be better off pouring money into missile defense and pulling out of NATO. We'd spend a lot less on defense and would have far less conflicts if we just concentrated on protecting this hemisphere and our sea trade routes. China and Russia would have no issues with us in that scenario. Probably the path of least resistance.

Hell, just stay in NATO as an allie. We can have a mutual defense treaty without us carrying virtually the entire load. No need to have a bunch of US bases and troops over there. Are here any German bases here? That shows you what a one way relationship this is.

Germany helped create the Balkans mess by prematurely recognizing Croatia. Probably trying to get Serbia back for WWI and partisans in WWII. There was still a chance for a negotiated settlement of the Yugoslavian breakup.

And this is exactly what I was saying in my "American't " thread. Once they see that no one is minding the store, they will swoop in and steal the merchandise.
