Multiple All-American awards don't hurt. I think Long just got one his senior year. OTH, when someone says "Ealey" the knee-jerk response is "Long" so maybe they do go 1-2.

I'm going with Page at 2.

Wouldn't bet on that. Depends who votes. Page was a selfish player who wasn't much of a team guy. FWTW

RE: All Century Team
Rocket QB Gene Swick was 1st Team All MAC-3 times, MAC Back of the Year-2 twice.1st Team All American UPI, 3rd Team All American AP, Sammy Baugh Award Winner, 10th Heisman Award voting. Presented National Offensive Player of the Year at the New York Athletic Club by Football Round up Magazine. Played in Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine game. National Total Offense Leader as a Senior, #2 Junior year, #3 as a Soph. Probably should be #2 or #3 ON UT's All Century Team. Gene's UT records stood for 30 years until they were broken by Bruce G. Big difference in the game in the early 70's with most of Swick's passes going downfield to WR's. No bubble screens back then.04-cheers

He was great but, unfortunately, played on a lot of bad teams. That won't help,

May have hindered his AP All American selection and Heisman vote getting too. Probably would have done better.

As I recall, the standards for "All-American" have changed quite a bit since Long's time but still a credit that Page was able to grab that attention. He was fun to watch, he had good QBs but he had a lot to do with making them better. Page had a way of being easy to find I guess.

Interesting. How do you pull off "selfish" when you're not the one passing the ball? As I recall, he was a pretty decent downfield blocker too. No?

I never got "selfish" vibes. Never saw him pout or yell at a QB for missing him- given some talk before he came to UT I expected some issues but never heard of any. And his " I CAN spell it, but I WON'T" skit is my favorite Rocket commercial of all time.

Probably just referring to his decision to not return for his senior year. I wouldn't call it selfish as much as just stupid. He could have got insurance against an injury and taken the time to develop further - physically and mentally - just like Lance Moore and Chester Taylor did. Worked out pretty well for them and he had similar talents as Moore. Not sure he had the same mental toughness because of his decision. It didn't need to be now or never before he got his degree. Bad advice given and received is likely the culprit, but that is just an opinion with no basis in fact other than what you read and how it played out.
