They are more respected even if they go Independent than Liberty. If they do go Independent? Could we see schools like Youngstown State, Delaware, Stony Brook, Albany and Towson follow suit? Those 5 may not have trouble scheduling as Independents. This could be the start of a new crop of Independents that eventually formed new conferences for all sports. It is also cheaper to show live football games for Independents on tv than for a full conference. ESPN might be able to afford to show JMU than the Big 10. JMU have played a lot of the ACC schools, so there is a connection there anyways.

won't they all join in as founders of The Big David State Conference 03-idea

Would a great Northeast football conference be formed taken UMass., ARMY, Old Dominion, Marshall, Buffalo and Charlotte to go 11, and maybe steal another Ohio school from the MAC like Ohio?

Please stop!

Army just has to get in on that!!

It sounds like they might take any offer. C-USA is full right now. They could join the Sun Belt Conference to build their program up for the next time C-USA raids SBC again in case they get raided themselves.
CUSA might need to be concerned with the Sunbelt raiding them.

If you could get UMass, Stony Brook, Youngstown St, JMU, and Liberty to all work together you have the makings of a pretty decent proto-conference or confederation of independents with a scheduling alliance. You could even let NMSU in on it too.

RE: James Madison U. To FBS?
JMU had an invite to join the MAC along with Old Dominion as full members back when ODU was looking at moving up. JMU said they weren't ready, and ODU didn't want to blow their chance so they took C-USA's offer instead. The MAC kept the invite open, contingent on UMass joining as a full member. When that didn't happen, communication stopped. JMU had their chances, and chose to remain FCS.

You can't wait for the absolutely perfect opportunity before you make a move. You have to take your chances sometimes that means taking an intermediate step. JMU isn't going to jump directly to the AAC or wherever their administration sees as the perfect fit. Those conferences aren't taking FCS move-ups. You gotta prove you belong first.

It must drive JMU fans frig-gin crazy. Nobody, except the JMU administration, doesn't know why JMU would not have moved up with ODU whether it was the MAC, CUSA or any other conference.

Feel for you JMU fans, but we had the same issue in the lat 70's going with 1AA, not leaving the A10 when the Big East was forming, again in 1998 and after that. Ten years is nothing as we waited so long that I thought I never see the day. Then the administration turned over and bam. We've been play catch-up ever since. JMU current does not have that issue as the stadium is FBS ready and the football program is strong now. Keep it that way and when you do move, you'd be more like Appalachia State than us, taking 6-8 years to find the groove.

Yup, a proto-conference stretching from Western Massachusetts and the hinterlands around NYC to a school up the road from El Paso would really give the "compact" outcome CUSA & the SBC so clearly lack.

Chill. The first 5 schools in that listed are listed together for a reason--proximity and the real potential to someday operate as a G5 level conference. When I said that they could let NMSU in on it I'm talking about a temporary measure to help fill out schedules. I'm not saying that a school in Las Cruces, NM has a long term future as a conference member with those first 5.
