This one was a little different. There are uprooted trees ALL over the city. We had a massive branch fall from probably 50 feet up in our backyard (from a tree that was limbed less than a year ago). Luckily, it didn't hit our house, fench, shed, patio, etc... But, it did take down cable and power lines. I never really considered that tree to be a threat to fall on lines, though.

Memphis has a lot of trees... A lot of which are 50-100 years old. Until we start going underground (which I anticipate will never happen), we'll have these sorts of instances now and then. Memphis gets some rough storms, and Saturday's was no exception.

I had planned to work today. Got to Jackson Ave, near Evergreen and they had it shut down. I went up to Vollintine and was shocked at the damage. There were poles down all along the road and trees broken and uprooted. Most of the redlights were out. Looked like a tornado went through but only tore down telephone poles and wires.

Power back on downtown, went off saturday night and just got it back about an hour ago. Was about to throw all the food away so thankfully it wasn't wasted.

This aint the first time they've had power outages, because tree branches are too close to the power lines. I lived thru 3 of the outages...and no more. We may have an outage or so every blue moon up north...but it isn't because of trees near the power lines.

Something tells me this may be a scheme of sorts....kickbacks for MLG&W from tree trimming services. Wouldn't surprise me a bit,

It takes a special kind of stupid to think this way.

I live in Evergreen and it's a war zone. Huge trees fallen everywhere. Right through the middle of houses.

Preventive maintenance my white arse.

Who knows when we will have power. But keep on being stupid.

Looks like our power will be out for 7 to 14 days, that's what I'm told. Bad thing is there's only 22 houses in my Hood without power. The good thing is my brother had a generator. The ice box, computer and TV are up and running. Be safe out there 04-cheers

Dark as F here in High Point Terrace, although it looks like the block over just got their power back. Keeping my fingers crossed that this will all be over soon.

I drove through Frayser today and it looked like a war zone. Hope those guys are making it okay.

I most certainly am not defending MLGW but I did see their trucks all over Memphis today.

Power lines along the green line are pretty banged up. MLGW was working on it tonight but when I went back by around 8:30 everyone was gone.

The crews MLG&W hires are known for butchering trees and cutting back too much, effectively creating "sails" on trees that catch the wind and topple. Most of the trees that fell were in fairly saturated ground with full new spring leafing that caught these 90 mph winds. I was riding in a car when the winds hit. It was horrific and terrifying.

We have 250 huge trees down here. This, IMHO, was not a case of any kind of corruption, although I do agree we have a plethora of that with our elected officials.

I think it fell during Hurricane Elvis, too. It was amazing wind last night. Perhaps it needs better securing at the base, though.

Trust me, Midtown is a war zone. If you are in Memphis, stop biatching and go out and help someone. Many of us are lucky to be alive today. Having been in a car when it hit without warning, I now know what it's like to be in a hurricane, along with many others. My BF had just arrived home, got out of the car and got his leg past the door, when the wind slammed it so hard he swears it could have cut off his leg.

Here's what I love about the South-

Limited complaining about Mother Nature. Mostly just gassing up the generators and chainsaws and cutting our way out, and then helping our neighbors to do the same.

Y'all be careful-plenty of ways to get hurt out there yet.

In Nashville, they butchered my beautiful tree but it has not prevented high wind damage to the lines. It might help some in an ice storm, however.

Trees down does not come close to a 'war zone'. Trust me.
