You guys need to be proud - Amazing start in Football Scheduling
It is hard to believe it was mid Feb this year that you all announced FBS and they teams you have gotten so far.

Heading to Liberty
ACC
Wake
Syc
VA

MWC
New Mexico

SBC
Troy

CUSA
ODU
North Texas

MAC
Buffalo

Indy
Army
BYU
UMASS
NMSU

I think there is a decent chance of a 2-1 with Wolfpack, ODU offering another might be the only challenge. But plan for at least a payday at Raleigh. Also, I would not be surprised if Duke and BC does a 2-1.

I would not be shocked to see Liberty tries and gets 2-3 of the following teams below from Conferences they have not gotten yet before the start of this football season.

AAC - ECU and Cincy get offered a 2-1
SEC - Vandy and Ky get offered 2-1
B10 - Purdue and Ill offered 2-1

Also seeing some of these teams App, Charlotte, Coastal, UAB, ODU, Ga State, Ga Southern, Marshall, WKY, Akron, Ball St, or Kent signing H/H future dates between now and next year.

Probable FCS teams going to Liberty - NCCU, ELON, Richmond, JMU, Citadel, Furman, EKU

Again, you school has done an amazing job in such a short time frame. 04-cheers

So, living in Korea I don't get preseason college football magazines on the news stands. Is there mention of Liberty in any of them? I can't wait till next season and we have our own section right next to Notre Dame, BYU and Army. That'll be so cool!!

Athlon has us #23 Preseason FCS. I have to admit I am anxious to get through this season quickly because I have the 2018 FBS Transitional Season on the mind. Then again, a season-opening victory over the Bears would be perhaps one of the happiest day of my life. I would wear LU gear to church for months just to shut down all of the BU chatter.

Just curious, why do you only refer to 2018 as transitional as both this upcoming season and next are transition years with each season having it's own set of rules? The significant difference is not how you view yourself but rather how the NCAA allows other teams to view you. Year one you must be considered an FCS team for your opponents bowl purposes, whereas in year two, though you are not allowed to go bowling, your opponents can consider your game to qualify them for a bowl.

The formal process declares 2017 as our FCS Transitional Season and 2018 as our FBS Transitional Season when we must begin adhering to FBS regulations. We will have full FBS membership in 2019. Essentially we will be in no-man's land this fall playing for nothing other than the scoreboard each week. Hopefully we use it to develop our tools and improve our offense.

In addition, 2018 if there are not enought bowl teams. A 6-6 Liberty would be picked for a bowl before a 5-7 APR team. Only reason Ga Southern couldn't go was there were enough bowl teams that season.

RE: You guys need to be proud - Amazing start in Football Scheduling
If we judge the amount of comments on CSNbbs about LU a) becoming indy, and b) the evolving FBS schedule, compared to when ODU, App St, GaSo, and Charlotte went from FCS to FBS, it hands down LU has garnered double triple or possibly quadruple interest, from complimentary to condescending and everything in between. LU reminds me of the UofM when I lived in Boca in the 1980s and early 1990s, the Canes highlight years. Everybody rooted against the Canes because they were a) a private school and b) they kicked most everyone's butt on national TV. Although Miami has had the past 10+ years of mediocre play, people still get pumped to play the Canes.

The hundreds if not thousands of comments on the multiple threads where LU is mentioned on this bbs is an indication of the interest in LU. This interest dwarfs the FCS-FBS transition of all other recent teams. Granted circumstances are different with multiple teams moving to conferences vs. LU becoming indy, but that's the point. LU generated the most comment when the indy status was granted. That was topped by weeks of naysayers boasting how LU will fail in it's attempt to arrange a FBS schedule. And then again interest topped when Trump announces the schedule and that dialogue continued for several weeks.

And LU is yet to play as a FBS team beyond transition years. One can expect the rhetoric and comments, many negative and ridiculing along with a trend to those without a dislike for the team, to follow the LU indy path.

I've stated since I joined this board 5+ years ago that LU would be, and is now becoming a lightning rod. Opposing teams fans will say "we cannot lose to Liberty". As a fan who watched those first games at City Stadium in the 1970s, it is really going to be a hoot when LU gets a big time signature win at the Bill or especially on the road.

And it is going to be lots of fun. And LU fans, be prepared for the onslaught of opposing team rhetoric and smack talk. Ask me how cool it was to watch the Canes play beat ND and other top national championships teams. Ask Turner Gill. He will remember it well. And LU is knocking on the door wanting to get in.

I'm proud of what we've accomplished in such a short period. I look forward to developing future rivalries, future bowl games, and more NFL draft picks.

Would Liberty need 7 wins because it is playing 2 FCS schools in 2018? Then again given the circumstances under which they would be selected it may not really matter.

Technically yes, Typically the NCAA waives the the 1 FCS rules if there are not enough 6-6 teams. USA got such a waiver last year to get in at 6-6 with 2 FCS wins. NCAA does everyting to avoid the APR 5-7 teams.

Nobody, especially the naysayers, and I believe even LU fans including including myself, saw this quality of a 2018 schedule. It is truly a high quality job LU did with the powers that be creating this schedule. BSC in 2017, this schedule in 2018. What a contrast. Go figure.

Feel free to prove me wrong, but I'm almost positive 2018 renders you ineligible for a bowl just as 2017 will. GA Southern won the Sunbelt Conference title their second season of transitioning and could not go to a bowl. It's my understanding that for two seasons you virtually are competing for nothing but victories during your playing season. This is why most teams are not very good those two years. They are red-shirting some of their very best players. I also "think" in year one of your transition you get a small bump in scholies to hand out, another bump during your second season, but it's not until after you complete that second season until you have a full 85 schollies available. I'd love to see a source to prove or disprove what I'm stating, so if anyone can provide one, it would be appreciated.

As stated earlier, Ga Southern was hindered by too many bowl teams being elgible and was not granted a waiver. Since then the G5 bowls were added. In addition, I said they are the last option before 5-7. I believe Coastal Carolina falls into this catergory this year and Liberty next. If JMU ever gets to FBS, you will get to learn all these rules and waivers. 03-wink

Insufficient Number of Deserving Teams

If an insufficient number of institutions does not meet the definition of a "deserving team" to participate in postseason bowl games in a particular year, an institution that meets a condition set forth below shall be eligible as an alternate to be selected to participate in such a bowl game after all deserving teams have been selected to participate. All institutions that meet the first condition must be selected before an institution that meets the second condition may be selected and so forth in descending order. The conditions below represents the order in whichalternates are identified in the event there are insufficient number of deserving teams:

1. An institution that would have met the FCS Opponent exception but for the fact that one victory was against
a FCS opponent that had not averaged 90 percent of the permissible maximum number of grants-in-aid per
year in football during a rolling two-year period and the institution's waiver request was denied.

2. An institution that participated in 13 regular-season contests and finished the season with a record of six
wins and seven losses.

3. An institution that is in its final year of reclassification from the Football Championship Subdivision to the Football Bowl Subdivision and meets the definition of a "deserving team". NCAA still needs to approve a waiver if a team is 6-6 with two FCS wins to be a "deserving team".

4. An institution that finished its season with a minimum of five wins and a maximum of seven losses and achieves a multiyear football APR score that permits participation in the postseason (e.g., 930) to beidentified as alternates in descending order of the most recently published multiyear FBS football APR scores.

We are bumping up scholarships significantly for this fall. We would require a waiver for a bowl bid in 2018. We wanted to get that clock ticking as quickly as possible. It doesn't sound like we are planning on redshirting starters like some transitioning schools have done recently. If we did, it would likely be during this fall and the not following one.

That's a relief. Despite playing for nothing this season, I would hate to spoil our move up by not winning as many games as we should. I think building momentum should be a priority and having a poor season would really put a damper on moving up. Plus, the players we are recruiting now should theoretically be better than our current players as we should be recruiting better players as an FBS team.

Plus LU is going to be a BIG target for all FCS schools as App State was in the cross hairs of LU when the game was in Boone.

That's a good point and shouldn't be understated. We'll have a target on our back as a future FBS school and our opponents will especially want to beat us.

As stated, LU Is playing for wins during your season these two years of transition. Beginning with your third season, you go undefeated you'll certainly be bowling. Whereas, with a wing and a prayer in year two and go undefeated, the probability of a bowl invitation is barely above non-existent.

BP, do you even follow FBS football? The past two years there have been multiple 5-7 teams. Did you not even read the information you requested? I will say that with the demise of the Ponsettia bowl, using last years model, they would not have made it since a 6-7 team and USA was given a waiver with two FCS wins would get picked over them as the next to last options to APR teams.

In 2018, if Liberty goes 7-5 2018, they go before any 5-7 team if there are not enough teams. If they go 6-6, NCAA historically has given waivers to 6-6 teams with two FCS wins to avoid the APR teams.

As well, in 2019, unless Frisco still has an open slot which is currently against NCAA bowl rules, it does not matter if Liberty goes 12-0, 7-5 or 6-6, there will need to be a tie-in not met and undefeated Liberty will not have a bowl unless it is a CFP access slot. 7 wins places them above in 6 wins "Deserving" at-large teams and 6 wins puts them "Deserving" catergory which means if there are not enough teams they have to be picked.

I am not saying what is likely in 2018 & 19, but 2017 is the only year that they are playing for wins only with no chance for post season. 2018 and on, there are opportunities to play in bowls but it depende more on failure of other teams than the success of Liberty.

2020 with the new bowl contracts, I would not be surprised if the NCAA modifies the two bowl-tie in rule to allow independents as a tie-in as a group. Lets say the Popcorn bowl has a tie-in with a P5/65 on one side the other side could be Independent Tie-In if the are will to group (BYU, ARMY, UMASS, NMSU & LIBERTY) other wise each independent has to sign with a bowl like Army and BYU have done.

RE: You guys need to be proud - Amazing start in Football Scheduling
You are almost guaranteed a bowl at 6-6, it could be a decent one as well. The P-5 conferences have struggled filling all their obligations due to the number of tie-ins.
