No doubt 2018 is a lame home schedule, but would it be any better in the MWC? Frankly, it's pretty similar to what BYU saw pre-2011 in the WAC and MWC every other year (when the Utah game was in SLC).
Utah St., Hawaii, NIU (as good as many MWC games) and P5 Cal.
But, to say that 2019 and 2020 are a *little better* makes obvious troll obvious.
2019: Utah, USC, Washington, Boise St.
2020: Michigan St., Missouri, SDSU, Utah St.
2021: Utah, Arizona St., Virginia, Boise St. (and Arizona in Vegas - part of BYU's home package)
I'll take a stinker schedule every once in a while if it means more frequent schedules like 2019, 2020, and 2021 - see also- 2023 and 2025:
- Tennessee, Stanford, Boise St. (and likely Utah)
- Stanford, Minnesota, Virginia, (and likely Utah)
And, tons of quality road games for BYU's national fan base, where fans and alumni throughout the country actually attend games - go ask Arizona, WVU, Cincinnati, Houston, etc. how many BYU fans were at their games.
You quoted the most insignificant part of my post. The point behind that sentence is that the 2019-20-21 schedules are pretty much full and they're already short on home games.
Maybe you'll take a "stinker schedule every once in a while," but my guess is that most casual fans will not. That will impact the season ticket base.
And all that travel takes a big toll on your players - how good will they perform when they've traveled cross-country 3 weekends in a row and they're facing a fresh team that hasn't left its state in a month? It will impact the win-loss record, without a doubt.
2019 has 6 home games. 2020 and 2021 are full of *quality* home games - each season, BYU just needs one more G5 opponent and the FCS payday game. Easy.
The season ticket base for 2018 will definitely take a hit...meanwhile, BYU fans will enjoy games in Arizona, Wisconsin, Washington, Idaho, and Massachusetts. Then, season tickets will reach all-time highs for 2019, 2020, and 2021.
The travel thing is an issue and already affects BYU's win-loss record - basically par for the course since independence - by design.
2016 - BYU played in Arizona, Maryland, Michigan, Idaho, and Ohio.
2015 - Nebraska, California, Michigan, California (again) and Missouri.
2014 - Connecticut, Texas, Florida, Idaho, Tennessee, and California.
2013 - Virginia, Texas, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Nevada.
2012 - Idaho, Indiana, Georgia, California, New Mexico
2011 - Mississippi, Texas, Oregon, Texas (again), Hawaii
Bowl games in this span in: California(x3), Texas, Florida, and Las Vegas
2017 is no exception - Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina, California, Nevada and Hawaii.
Going on 6 years now, BYU usually plays in every timezone during the regular season..by design. This year, we throw in Hawaii timezone too! And BYU fans throughout the nation love it, despite only 8 or 9 wins the last several seasons.
